Voeden van lichaam en geest ++ Nourishment for body and mind

Voeden van lichaam en geest.
Nourishment for body and mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 31 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Harte groeten,
Hans

Nourishment of body and mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
A candle will not burn without fuel and without oxygen. The flame needs nourishment. After you have put in the initial heat to ignite, the flame gives enough heat to keep burning.
This metaphor helps me often to investigate my thoughts and emotions. Sometimes there is an awareness: 'There is unrest in me'. or 'Melancholy', or 'Anger'. And of cause also: happiness, joy, and contentment.
Often I was not aware what had caused these feelings and thoughts. What the nourishment and conditions were for my feelings and thoughts.

The past weeks we have meditated and shared on how 'Contact' sets a process in motion in our mind. With the steps: Sense-inputs, Discernment, Feeling ((un-)pleasant, neutral), Naming and Acting.
Thich Nhat Hanh writes in "The heart of the Buddha's teaching" in chapter 7 (page 31) about four kinds of nourishments:
Edible food
Sense inputs
Will (intention, volition)
Consciousness.

these last two, I always found a bit difficult, but the following two examples show how I experience it these days:
Will (intention, volition) can be so strong that it directs your full attention and energy, a strong intention gives energy.
Your consciousness can recollect thoughts and emotions and bring them in your attention again. The thoughts and emotions can reenforce each other and in that way create their own 'truth'. For instance they can keep on feeding 'anger'.

Recently there was a newspaper article with an interview of someone that had been radicalized for quite some time, but now had been able to step out of that.
He told that by seeing the same kind video's over and over again, and sharing them within a group; and by listening to the same opinions over and over again, he saw that his disappointment became outrage. And slowly turned into
and indignation, anger and hate. He said literally: "We consumed each day our anger and with that we were feeding our hate. So strongly, that we did not see the other anymore as a person, but merely as an obstacle"
His way out of this whirlpool, this maelstrom turned out to be simple, but difficult and slow. He began to read other newspapers and information sources. Slowly a curiosity developed on why other people did not feel the same anger. Now after a long proces he could step back, and put things in a broader perspective, see things from multiple angles again.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

This mind, This Body ++ Deze geest, Dit Lichaam

Dit lichaam, deze geest.
This body, this mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 24 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,
Het maakte me blij.

Harte groeten,

Hans

This body, this mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
Yesterday evening I rode home on my bicycle.
From the village I chose the path through the woods.
For the first time in weeks it was cool and fresh in the woods. The months of draught and heat have had a huge impact. There was great concern among everyone that lives here over the chance of forest-fire and if the trees and plants would survive.
Now, after a week of rain and clouded sky it looks like the forest is rebouncing. I could see the trees and the undergrowth take in the water and give it to the leaves.

It made me happy
Deeper in the wood the path narrowed, so that the crowns touched and eventually became a whole. The sounds of the birds, the light of the sunset, the scent of the wet moss, everything dissolved into a whole.
Without words the awareness came : "We are doing well"

The past weeks we have meditated and shared on how 'Contact' sets a process in motion in our mind. With the steps: Sense-inputs, Discernment, Feeling ((un-)pleasant, neutral), Naming and Acting.
The discernment has a special consequence. It brings a separation: 'this is white and that is red', but also: 'here and there' and 'you and I'.
The sentence: "I see you" tells a lot. Suddenly there is an 'I' and a 'you' and there is an awareness, a discernment, a perception.
Our mind (our consciousness) has made a split in a whole, a you and an I.

During my ride through the woods, the discernment was apparently switched off. There was no 'I" anymore and there was no 'wood' anymore.
Nature draws no boundaries and gives no names.
According to the Buddhist insights: The nature of reality is inter-being.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Handelen vanuit vrijheid ++ Acting in freedom

 Handelen vanuit vrijheid

Acting in freedom

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 17 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Onze mind krijgt voortdurend zintuig informatie.

In zijn nieuwste boek : At Peace Filled with joy, schrijft Cuong Lu:

Harte groeten,
Hans

Acting in freedom
Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When there is a knock on the door, do you open?
When the phone rings, do you answer?
You see something in the shop-window, do you enter?
When you smell something nice, do you eat it immediately?
There is a song on the radio you don't like, do you turn it off?

Our mind gets sensory information constantly.
Some inputs get our attention, get meaning and direct our actions. Often from habit and not by conscious choice.

More simply put:
Can you slow down, take a pause, look again, take a breath.
Can you stay with your stability, stay at your source, can you keep the clarity of your mind or restore it. Do you have enough space to let your heart speak. Certainly when a situation hits you emotionally or brings you out of balance

Above are two pages from the new book by Cuong Lu : At Peace Filled with Joy
In this fragment, Cuong describes that the conditioning of our mind is forming habits that can be so strong that we even do not recognize them any more as a 'habit'.

Your mind is so eager to chase the thoughts, that it looks almost impossible to stay at rest.
Observing the 'disturbances' and the 'grabbing' by the mind, helps you to observe that there is an empty and silent space. Cuong reminds us that we have 'agency' that we have the freedom and the capability to act free from our conditioning.

You can smile to the thoughts and and the mental constructs. Learn to see and recognize that you, yourself are OK. That you are that silent and stable space.
Your breath, your loving non-judgmental attention and compassion form a bedding, a safe space. It is as if you put the marble in the hollow side of the spoon.
There are disturbances, you observe them, smile and return.
Use the space, the stability and the wisdom that is already in you.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Volgen of niet? ++ Follow or not?

Volgen of niet?
Follow or not?

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 3 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Onze mind krijgt voortdurend zintuig informatie.

Follow or not?

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When there is a knock on the door, do you open?
When the phone rings, do you answer?
You see something in the shop-window, do you enter?
When you smell something nice, do you eat it immediately?
There is a song on the radio you don't like, do you turn it off?

Our mind gets sensory information constantly.
Some inputs get our attention, get meaning and direct our actions. Often from habit and not by conscious choice.
Some stimuli we don't even notice, or we find them unimportant.
For example someone walking a dog in the corner of our field of view, or the background music in a shop.

As soon as we discern something and become conscious of it there is contact. In the Buddhist psychology this has been investigated and has been described in detail. In those situations the "Contact" starts (awakes) the attention, followed by a feeling (pleasant, un pleasant, neutral). This leads to an interpretation and a decision (wil)

This contact can be formed due to all our senses.
Our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and our mind.
Without intervention or further investigation this proces runs itself, on the basis of our experience and our habits.
There are a few moments in this chain where we can take a different turn on this path.
The moment our attention is awakened, we can deepen it. fi 'do I see or hear this correctly?'
The moment that the feeling arises: we can investigate if this feeling does justice to the situation and the reality of the moment.
In our interpretation we can consider if there is enough information for a conclusion.
Even so with the formation of 'will' : does it do justice to the situation, is it healing and nourishing.

More simply put:
Can you slow down, take a pause, look again, take a breath.
Can you stay with your stability, stay at your source, can you keep the clarity of your mind or restore it. Do you have enough space to let your heart speak. Certainly when a situation hits you emotionally or brings you out of balance

Your mind is so eager to chase the thoughts, that it looks almost impossible to stay at rest.
Observing the 'disturbances' and the 'grabbing' by the mind, helps you to observe that there is an empty and silent space.
You can smile to the thoughts and and the mental constructs.
Observations are just observations, meaning is constructed by our mind.
