Dear Friends,
When you spend two hours with your computer you might forget enterily that you have a body. And when your mind is not with your body, you cannot be truly alive; you are lost in your work, in your worry, your fear, and your projects. By breathing in mindfully and bringing the mind home to the body, we become fully alive. When we bring our mind home to our body, our mind becomes one with our body. Our body becomes a mindful body, and our mind becomes an embodied mind. This state of oneness of body and mind allows us to get back in touch with the wonder of life, and our body is the first wonder of life that we encounter. Our body contains the earth, the sun, the stars, and the whole cosmos, including our ancestors. These words are written by Thich Nhat Hanh about the unity of body and mind. This text contains a challenge for me. Partly it is a language problem. We are so used to say: 'I have a body. I focus my awareness on my breathing and return home'. Would it be better to say: 'I am my body?' Where is the I that focus this awareness on the breath?
Yesterday, something made me angry. The angry feeling felt strongly as a physical experience. Where in my body is this anger? ‘Don’t express your anger by words, focus your awareness on your breathing and relax. Your awareness has a healing effect.’ Which is true. I calmed down and I got an insight. Where in my body is this awareness?
Last week I walked with someone whom I hadn’t seen for a very long time. Though I am very aware of the social distance protocol I experienced a very strong longing to embrace him. What is the source and place of this longing?
Part of this complexity is because it is difficult to express this with words. Maybe it is better to return to your cushion together, return to silence, and inquire this relationship between body and mind. The practice is: ‘Breathing in, I know I have a body, and my body is a wonder of life’
Thursday night we will have an online meditation via ZOOM, we will practice in cultivating our open and free awareness. In doing so, we can experience the wonder of life through the unity of body and mind.
I wish you relaxation and open awareness Joost
