Dear Sangha friends, beste Sangha vrienden (Dutch below)
Faith, our best friend in difficult times.
Faith, having confidence that the situation will turn for the better .
Sometimes faith is not there yet and we have hope that faith will come.
So how can we touch faith, find our faith, dare to rely on our faith ?
For me the energy of faith rises when I look at what we are and what I observe in other people.
We are humans, capable of basic goodness, compassion and solidarity.
It is very tempting to see the in-humane behavior around us and to get stuck in that, like quicksand.
The antidote for that is the observation that basic goodness, love and compassion exists. It will rise at the worst moments and the wonder is that you have it in you. We all have it in us.
The past weeks we have looked at strong emotions, and how to deal with that. Thich Nhat Hanh invites us to sit and look deeply. Last week we looked at the urge to walk away as a signal that we are close.
This week we look at faith, at no fear, to observe our emotion with open eyes, open mind and open heart.
When we experience emotion, we can observe that there is an emotion. Like in the cinema, we can experience joy, fear, sadness, anger, just by looking at a screen with a light pattern on it. It is very real at that moment, but it is just an emotion, a signal to wake us up. A call to take action.
Which action we take depends on our understanding of the situation. Have I seen it correctly? Am I acting on the full picture or am I reacting on auto-pilot?
Sometimes we fear that we will be overwhelmed by an emotion and we push it away or we walk away from a situation. Remember that you have the capacity take care of your emotions, to have compassion, that you are not alone. Remember that there is goodness, kindness and support around you.
The past is gone, the people and situations of the past are gone and the future is still open. Every moment is new, the future will be new, you have the capacity to touch your happiness.
