Smiling to changes. When I was a novice, I could not understand why, if the world is filled with suffering, the Buddha has such a beautiful smile. Later I discovered that the Buddha has enough understanding, calm and strength; that is why the suffering does not overwhelm him. He is able to smile to the suffering because he knows how to take care of it and to help and transform it. (Thich Nhat Hanh, teachings on love) Dear friends, this is my invitation for you to inspire you in your practice and to join us in the ONLINE Sangha. This Friday I received a book. The title touched me deeply. “We are made for these times”. It is written by a Dharma teacher: Kaira Jewel Lingo, trained in the Plum Village community. I am living in restless, uncertain times full of disruption and change. How can the Dharma nourish me, give me stability, insight? Earlier this week a little boy passed me on his very small bike. He was fully concentrated to keep his bike stable and to bike fast enough to stay before his father. I received a present; an insight. What I am thinking, doing and saying today is a contribution to his future. His future will be different. Maybe he will not bike with his son. No bikes anymore. How the future will be different is yet unknown. When I was as young as he is there was no possibility to practice together even if everybody had to stay at home. New form of community. I feel connected with that boy. His world is my world. What can I do? This is not easy. If I look into the world of today, I see a lot of things that worry me. A lot of questions, sometimes a strong feeling of loss and resistance. Great worries about our future. Where do I find an anchor? Where is my steering-wheel, my direction, my confidence, my path? Lingo remembers me of 10 practices of the Dharma and says: look inside. I closed the book. Sat on my cushion. Relax. Silence. What is already in me? The insight of impermanence arose, today is a small part of a greater change in nature. That comforted me. The insight of coming home to myself, home, in this moment presented itself. The image of the seed. It is in the ground and it must feel the weight and the inertia of the earth as it seeks to break out of its shell on its way up. It is an effort to make a way in the earth, reach the surface and receive the sunlight to transform into a plant and smile to the sun. To be present in this moment. No longing for the past, at the moment there was no virus or lockdown. There is resistance in me. I feel the loss of the live Sangha-meeting. One of our practices is not to cling at a habit, at the past. Let it go. Smile in this wonderful moment. To stop. Don’t lose your stability by drowning in the storm of the news, the reactions, looking for someone who makes mistakes. Look deeply into your thoughts and feelings. If there is just one person in a boot who can stay calm the other people will also become calm. I am grateful to Jewel Lingo for her mirror and insight. We are ready for his time, because we practice being present with an open heart, focus what is there. An insight in what the circumstances of these times show us: forms of impermanence, change and interbeing. I don’t have to look outside. It is already in me. To stop, return to my breath, look deeply to what is in me: worries, expectations, thoughts of loss. But also calmness, insight, confidence, stability, awareness of what you need and what you can do. Make contact with your ability to deal with this change. Than you can help building the future contributing insight and trust. The image of the seed. Water it and let it grow. To practice this reaching inside and smiling together is a gift to ourselves, our environment and the future of the little biker. I invite you to sit together in the Sangha at your own place of stability and practice open awareness. So that you can strengthen your stability in the boat that is floating on a river that is life, a stream of endless transforming. I wish you a very relaxing sunday with a smile. I hope to see you online. Joost Vriens. |
