Volgen of niet? ++ Follow or not?

Volgen of niet?
Follow or not?

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 3 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Onze mind krijgt voortdurend zintuig informatie.

Harte groeten,
Hans

Follow or not?

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When there is a knock on the door, do you open?
When the phone rings, do you answer?
You see something in the shop-window, do you enter?
When you smell something nice, do you eat it immediately?
There is a song on the radio you don't like, do you turn it off?

Our mind gets sensory information constantly.
Some inputs get our attention, get meaning and direct our actions. Often from habit and not by conscious choice.
Some stimuli we don't even notice, or we find them unimportant.
For example someone walking a dog in the corner of our field of view, or the background music in a shop.

As soon as we discern something and become conscious of it there is contact. In the Buddhist psychology this has been investigated and has been described in detail. In those situations the "Contact" starts (awakes) the attention, followed by a feeling (pleasant, un pleasant, neutral). This leads to an interpretation and a decision (wil)

This contact can be formed due to all our senses.
Our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and our mind.
Without intervention or further investigation this proces runs itself, on the basis of our experience and our habits.
There are a few moments in this chain where we can take a different turn on this path.
The moment our attention is awakened, we can deepen it. fi 'do I see or hear this correctly?'
The moment that the feeling arises: we can investigate if this feeling does justice to the situation and the reality of the moment.
In our interpretation we can consider if there is enough information for a conclusion.
Even so with the formation of 'will' : does it do justice to the situation, is it healing and nourishing.

More simply put:
Can you slow down, take a pause, look again, take a breath.
Can you stay with your stability, stay at your source, can you keep the clarity of your mind or restore it. Do you have enough space to let your heart speak. Certainly when a situation hits you emotionally or brings you out of balance

Your mind is so eager to chase the thoughts, that it looks almost impossible to stay at rest.
Observing the 'disturbances' and the 'grabbing' by the mind, helps you to observe that there is an empty and silent space.
You can smile to the thoughts and and the mental constructs.
Observations are just observations, meaning is constructed by our mind.

Learn to see and recognize that you, yourself are OK. That you are that silent and stable space.
Your breath, your loving non-judgmental attention and compassion form a bedding, a safe space. It is as if you put the marble in the hollow side of the spoon.
There are disturbances, you observe them, smile and return.
Use the space, the stability and the wisdom that is already in you.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

NB the Sanskit terms are:
Contact -- Sparsa
Attention -- Manaskara
Feeling -- Vedana
Conceptualisation - Samnja
Will - Cetana

Samatha, Stop en Adem ++ Stop and Breathe

Samatha.

Stoppen en ademen

Stop and breathe.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"

Maandag 27 July, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Harte groeten,

Hans

Samatha, Stop and breathe.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

 Dear Sangha,

Often I hear the question: 'What does meditation bring you?'

A more honest question would be: "What is taken away by meditation?"

The first question gives the immediate impulse: 'I have to do something' or 'I have to achieve something'.

It brings the feeling of 'success' or 'failure'.

While meditation is all about returning and letting go.

About returning to, about allowing the natural state.

Allowing to return to silence and clarity.

Meditation in a meditation room and in a meditation group is helping you and gives space to practice and develop this.

In our daily lives there is so much distraction and disturbance that our minds are constantly drawn away.

By practicing and making it a 'routine' it becomes easier to have a calm and clear mind even in difficult and hectic situations.

Meditation starts with stopping (Samatha). Learning to stop, noticing that you stop is already an enormous relief. Some people don't even recognize that they are running.

Stopping, bringing rest and balance to your body. Your breath helps you to relax, but also to bring back your attention.

Your attention has the habit to run after every thing and to grab it.

Stop and Breathe, helps you to calm down your mind.

Last week I got the following image:

When you want to put a marble on the back of a spoon, that will be very difficult. Anger, judgement and impatience will make it worse. With a lot of concentration and patience it may work. However the smallest disturbance will make the marble to roll off the spoon.

Your mind is so eager to chase the thoughts, that it looks almost impossible to stay at rest.

Observing the 'disturbances' and the 'grabbing' by the mind, helps you to observe that there is an empty and silent space.

You can smile to the thoughts and and the mental constructs.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.

I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,

Heartfelt regards,

Hans

Happiness is overrated ++ Geluk is overgewaardeerd (part 2)

Happiness is overrated.
Geluk is overgewaardeerd.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 18 Mei, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Is mijn verwachting, mijn beeld realistisch?

Citaat:

In raw mind, there is no good or bad, right or wrong. There is no separation between you and others, only the seamless continuity of interbeing. Everything simply is. Raw mind is a sanctuary deep within us, an oasis of peace. The path of practice helps move our point of reference from ordinary mind to raw mind.
Alles is gewoon.

Warme groeten
Hans

Happiness is overrated.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

It is difficult to step away from our habits.
Un-learning seems to be harder that learning.

Our mind is very clever in finding and adopting patterns.
It makes recognizing situations easier and faster. This is particularly important for recognizing and acting on danger.
Also finding food and comfort is such an interest. Recognizing is easier then finding out and evaluating each time anew. Less energy is needed.
We have become by this habitual creatures. In the extreme we live on auto-pilot.
We train our mind on our habits our preferences. Conditioning is another word for that process.

Is there something wrong with conditioning? Nothing is wrong when you stay open for reality, and put in the effort to check: is it still correct. Is my habit still helping and healing? Is my image, my expectation still realistic?
And that's where the hook is, is our image of happiness or suffering correct? Is it really so that we are alone?
What if you could look without image or expectation?

This week we look at the second core aspect of the book that was published in 2023, by Thay Cuong Lu with the intriguing title:
Happiness is overrated: Simple lessons on finding meaning in every moment.
It is available at the publisher Shambala

Last week we looked at: What is suffering and what is happiness.
This week we concentrate on: What is mind.

The above introduction describes that our mind can be conditioned, that we live out of habit with our conditioned mind.
But what is the untrained, unconditioned mind? The raw and wild mind?
The raw unconditioned mind is in direct contact with reality, unfiltered, without expectation or judgement.

Recently a summary was put on the site of Next Big Idea club with an audio fragment of Cuong reading the summary
Quote:
In raw mind, there is no good or bad, right or wrong. There is no separation between you and others, only the seamless continuity of interbeing. Everything simply is. Raw mind is a sanctuary deep within us, an oasis of peace. The path of practice helps move our point of reference from ordinary mind to raw mind.

This Monday we will focus on the second core aspect of the book:
How are we in contact with reality?; Via our conditioned mind or do we look each time as new, without expectation or judgement?
Do we assess our situation in comparison with our desired image, or do we live with reality as it is.
Are we open for directly experiencing the world around us, including all beauty and all raw-ness and pain.

Are we open to "see" the connectedness, experience the equality that naturally brings compassion and brings solidarity.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Warm regards
Hans

On the site of Shambala is the quote:
Stop chasing happiness and reconnect to the meaning of each moment through this practical guide, told through vignettes of life training as a Buddhist monk under world-renowned spiritual leader Thich Nhat Hanh.

We spend so much time in pursuit of happiness—trying to purchase it, experience it, meditate our way toward it—but happiness is elusive and doesn’t last. According to the teachings of the Buddha, Cuong Lu writes, “Suffering is not a problem to be solved. It is a truth to be recognized.” Happiness Is Overrated invites us to look deeply at the truths in our lives—not glossing over or denying our suffering—and to focus on the meaning and value already within us.

Nirodha ++ Uitdoven ++ Cessation / Dissolving.

Nirodha ++ Uitdoven ++ Cessation / Dissolving.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 30 maart, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Gewaarwording zonder herinnering, plan of betekenis.

Warme groeten
Hans

Nirodha ++ Cessation / Dissolving.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Our daily language contains much wisdom.
There are deep insights in expressions:
"to be shackled"
"to carry a load"
It are strong pointers to what we do and how we experience suffering.

I invite you to ask yourself the question, 'Who or what is carrying the load', 'who or what is shackled'.
It is very easy and tempting to identify with what je carry, what you hold on to.
To truly meet yourself, to truly discover yourself, it is necessary to leave all images, memories, desires, judgements alone. It is like looking to the white between the letters.

Coming home to yourself, is returning to yourself.
You home is your starting point, your source.
Your home is always there, are yo there too?
Or are you distracted, swept away?
Returning home is letting go of everything that pulls you away.

Leave your thinking, your desires, judging, remembering, fantasizing be, let them float and move your attention away.
When you experience that the letters float in the white, the images and concepts dissolve.
The extinguish, they cease to be, they dissolved.

Becoming aware without memorizing, planning or meaning.
When you let go of your thinking only the awareness remains.
For instance the awareness or your thinking, you become aware of your thoughts.
Or for instance the silence, you become aware of silence.
This is a space in which you become aware of what manifests or passes by.
This space is free of fear or loss, free of desire and aversion.

This space is like an island in the wild sea of thoughts and emotions.
A place where you experience stability.
Your mindfulness, your open , non-judgemental awareness helps you to make that step, to enter this space.
From that open space, from the open non-judgemental awareness, without memory or desire, you can observe yourself, the other, the world, the connectedness.
Your home, your source is connectedness, without separation.

The invitation is to be present, open, with mindfulness, without judgement. Be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with mindfulness, compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share together about pure awareness of the cessation, the dissolving.
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Juiste inspanning ++ Right effort

Juiste inspanning,
Right effort.

Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 9 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juist (Heel - Heilzaam) levens onderhoud
Juiste (Heel - Heilzame ) inspanning

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.
In one sutta, the Buddha taught that every day a monk should take a little time to reflect thus "I am the owner of my kamma, the heir of my kamma; I have kamma as my origin, kamma as my relative, kamma as my resort; I will be the heir of whatever kamma, good or bad, that I do" (In Pali, it's spelt/pronounced kamma and not karma).

In Buddhism, a key teaching is that our life is very much in our hands. One may find ourselves in various circumstances, with multiple choices before us. We should understand that it is we who choose our decisions, our own speech and actions. One cannot put blame nor assign credit to any external agent.

The 6th factor of the Eightfold Path is Right Effort. One who practises the path makes the effort to bring forth skilful actions that have not been done and to maintain skilful actions that one is already doing. Motivated by wisdom and selfless compassion, Ven Pannakara and the monks decided this walk is the right thing to do. They have put their ideas to action. They are walking because they formed the idea to do so in their own minds. Like a flowing river, each wave followed by the next, these thoughts and decisions are the results of their past training in the tradition.   I offer these words for your reflection.

https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

Warme groeten
Hans

Right effort,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Regularly we ask ourselves in our meditation:
How am I present in this world, how is the world present in me.
The 5th and 6th aspect of the Noble Eightfold path is making this question more concrete, we are invited to look deeply into:
Right (Whole - Wholesome) livelihood
Right (Whole - Wholesome) effort
(for effort you can also read diligence)

Is there insight in my actions?
Is my presence based on the insight of interbeing, of No-self (selflessness), is it based on impermanence (Timelessness)?

This week there was a post on social media from the monks that are participating in the "Walk for peace":

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.

(Note pls read the Sansrit: Karma or the Pali: Kamma as: result of action)

On Wednesday the 11th of Februari the monks will reach Washington DC and a concluding gathering will be held. (ca 20h30 NL-time) Which can be followed on facebook.
The program and details can be found on:
https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

This period we are studying the 4four Noble truths:

There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by sharing his insight:
The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend,
Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Lichaam en geest voeden ++ Nourishing body and mind

 Lichaam en geest voeden,

Nourishing body and mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 17 November, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Nourishing body and mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

"The fish sees the bait and is un-aware of the hook"

This metaphor helps us to keep our senses in "the safe zone" (eye, ear, nose, tongue, skin, mind) The invitation is to see reality, to look further than the immediate shortterm effect. To investigate the first impression of pleasant, unpleasant, neutral.

The past few weeks we studied "Emptiness" of perceptions.
A color is just a color, a shape is just a shape, they have no meaning in themselves, they are empty of meaning.
When we look at our body and mind we see that it is an assembly. (it is empty of a separate existence) Everything we collect, forms our body and mind. Everything we take-in is nourishment for our body and mind.

Being aware of what we consume and being aware of the nourishment of our body and mind helps us to become healthy and strong. When this does not come easy, we can help ourselves by guarding (or restraining) our sense-inputs. For instance we can choose to wait a while. Or we can choose to keep something outside our system, because we know what negative effect it has on us.
For instance you can choose to avoid intoxicants or hallucinating substances.
Another example is media content with violence and gossip. Or conversations with unconfirmed allegations or polarization.
The invitation is to investigate if something is nourishing and healing and if it is nourishing and healing for the other.

The Buddha has given five instructions (sila, precepts) as advise:
The fifth "Sila" is about Healing nourishment (for body and mind)
Are we aware of how we nourish our body and mind?
4 kinds of nourishments are identified:
*Edible food
*Information (from fi conversations, books, films, or other media)
*Our living environment
*Our will (as in determination, drive)

The question that reflecting our nourishment raises, is to investigate where we are free and where we are unfree. Are we being controlled by pain, fear, lust, or are we guided by love, caring, insight and connectedness. Do we choose to leave unhealthy food alone and do we choose for healthy, healing nourishment. for ourselves and for those around us.

In the Mind Only school, five contemplations are taken in mind before eating:
I see this food and I know where it comes from.
I am aware that many people in this world do not have enough healthy food.
I eat this food to give my body healthy nourishment.
I know that also my mind needs healthy nourishment.
I transform this food in insight and compassion.

An interesting experiment is to read those contemplations before we turn on the TV, open social media or read the newspaper.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of beauty, gratitude, connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Cuong Lu describes in 'Happiness is overrated' how concepts distort our view of the world and how our 'raw-mind' gets conditioned.

There are many formulations and applications of these instructions (see for instance 5MT), by continuous study and rephrasing to the current context, it becomes a living practice and it stays easy to connect to.

How are you. ++ Hoe is het met je.

How are you.

Hoe is het met je.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 27 Oktober, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

I have arrived, I am home
In the here and in the now
I am solid, I am free
In the ultimate I dwell

How are you.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

How are you?

The thought probably crossed your mind that this often is a routine question. Or even sometimes a rhetorical question.
Often it is answered by: Fine, thank you, and you?

A special observation is : When and how doe sit really come to a an deep conversation?
It would be a nice investigation to find out.
Is it safe enough, is there space enough, is it really the occasion for this, There are other more urgent matters, Do I have clear enough vision on it myself, I do not want to complain, I do not want to be indiscrete, I don't want to stir things up, I don't want to make it bigger than it is. And sometimes even the fear: Can I handle the conversation or the situation.

The above appears to be about the conversation between two persons, but it can equally be applied to the encounter with yourself.
Meeting yourself during meditation, or just in a silent moment.

When we meditate we create a safe, open space, where your mind can rest and observe. You have everything in you to see, hear and think clearly. You are bigger, wiser and more stable than you think.

You can be your own best friend, you can make space and give support by your open friendly attention.
Meditation is making space, being open, patient, receptive. Like you are when you sit down at the edge of a clearing in a forest. Only when you are still and non threatening, the shy animals show themselves. Only than you can perceive what lives there.
When something reveals itself in you, the weak signal, you can care for it with compassion.

Can you observe without concepts? When you let go of concepts and meaning, what do you see?

The extinguishing (niroda) of images, expectations and opinions (concepts) brings you in undivided open space, where equality, openness and freedom get a chance. Where suffering and happiness are sides of the same coin and are received with compassion and gratitude.
When we let go of our concepts or convictions we have a chance to meet and discover the other.

Stopping separation, opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.
Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

With the insight of Inter-being and the extinguishing of concepts, you can live with mindfulness in nirvana. Thich Nhat Hanh has expressed that in this song:
I have arrived, I am home,
In the here and in the now.
I am solid, I am free.
In the ultimate I dwell

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

These insights are beautifully described by Thich Nhat Hanh in the book: 'The art of living'

Ruimte om te helen ++ Space to heal.

Ruimte om te helen.

Space to heal.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 22 september, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Space to heal.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

"Only when I sat down I could feel how tired I was"
"I needed some time to catch my breath"
"I has been a tough period, we all shed some skin, but slowly we can relax again and look around"

The words may not come as a surprise to you, you may have used them yourself.
Humans are a powerful and resilient species. So powerful that we regularly run faster than our feet can carry.
The other side is there too, when the circumstances are rough, it turns out that we are more solid and capable of more than we thought.

There is however a difference if this power is rooted in willpower or in connectedness and trust. My experience is that moving on based on willpower often works, but in the end will have a high cost.

Our Buddhist practice gives us the option of "taking refuge".
An attempt to give that words would be:
Willpower originates from our mind (Our discursive thinking) and Taking refuge is rooted in our being.
When you take refuge, you enter a space that can be described as indivisible and  immutable. You let the world of separation go. You come home to your roots, your source.

A colleague who, with his family, was confronted with serious illness of his son told me this week:
"I can hardly give words to how we got through this together; The only thing I can think of is the word 'Love', we held each other with compassion and gratitude"

We can give space to connectedness.
In connectedness (non-separation) you are not alone an you can give the people around you space and support to heal.

You stop separation and judgement; You come home; You come home to your source.
In the words of Thich Nhat Hanh:
"I have arrived, I am home" In the safe place, where you do not have to up-hold or defend  anything.
Thay Cuong Lu says:
"You let go of your conditioned mind, and give room to your raw, unconditioned mind" You are open and receptive to become aware without discrimination (separation) or judgement. You are empty of separation.
As soon as you notice were you create separation, you also notice connectedness.

Life is a wondrous gift. A precious and unique present. You and I are a unique wonder. We have the opportunity to live without separation, with gratitude and compassion.

Stopping separation, opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.
Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Geen een, geen twee. ++ Not one, not two.

Geen een, geen twee.
Not one, not two.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 25 augustus, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Not one, not two.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Sometimes I pick up the photo album that my mother made when I was born. She lovingly put in photographs from the period that I was young. It moves me to see her handwriting and the small black and white prints. Memories, relics of precious moments.

During the meditation last week, a memory came of the first time I visited Plumvillage. Thay Cuong Lu was teaching and asked us to look at a photo from our childhood. And asked us: "Who is the person in that photograph? Is that someone else or is it the same person looking at it now?"

A follow-on question could be: Where is that person now?

It is a puzzle that confronts us regularly during our life. The presence in our mind is undeniable. As a memory, but also as a transmitted experience, insight, preferences and aversions. Sometimes in the foreground sometimes in the background.
When we become silent and leave the hectic of the day alone, we can observe, listen, connect; How is it present.

The life that I have now is given by the child in the photograph, my present self is the heir of the experiences and decisions from the past. There are decisions by my younger self, for which I and deeply grateful. Also there are decisions that had painful consequences, but when I look carefully, the younger self has always acted from the insight of the moment and with good intentions. Often under difficult circumstances and with limited or wrong information.
You are invited to connect and write a letter to your younger self. To express gratitude for all the care and effort. And also to forgive for everything that turned out differently.

Everything that manifests depends on causes and conditions. The present moment is made out of all causes and conditions of the past. Our ancestors, the formation of the earth, the seasons, the plants and animals. Also the future is made of causes and conditions, the future does not exist at all. It will be formed by our thoughts, our actions and all other (external) circumstances. The future will be formed.

You can also write a letter to your future self: "I will take good care of you"

How am I present in this world and how is the world present in me.
The present moment does not exist on its own, the past is not gone and the future is embedded in our presence. When you try to separate or isolate those three, you are doing something impossible.
When we accept that a human is porous and temporary, that boundaries (in time and space) are an illusion, there is nothing too cling to and there is nothing to cling with.
We are new and different in every moment. The person in the photo no longer exist, and when you look deeply, that person in the photo is still there. You and that person are not one and the same, but also not two different persons. It is our mind that makes the separation. When we look at ourselves and when we look at others.

Life becomes with that a wondrous gift.

Hans
