Bedding en rivier ++ Bed and River.

Bedding en rivier.

Bed and River.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"

Maandag 2 November, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Harte groeten,

Hans

De indeling van de avond is:

19:15: voorbereiden van de ruimte

19.30: aankomen, thee en ontmoeting

20h00  Inleiding thema, geleide meditatie, loopmeditatie,

stille meditatie.

Bed and River.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

 Dear Sangha,

This summer I had the opportunity reflect on what I have received.

It is this year 20 years ago that I set my first steps on the Buddhist path.

The circumstances at the time were not nice, in 2006 I was in bad shape.

By a leap of faith I stept into a new environment. An environment that I did not know, but that I recognized as nourishing and healing. I was received and carried by a loving community of monks, nuns and lay people.

Through the wisdom and guidance of Thich Nhat Hanh and Thay Cuong Lu, my life took a different direction. Fully convinced I can say now: I have received so much that it cannot be expressed in words.

There is an enormous gratitude in me for what I received, but also a gratitude to my younger self. Back then my younger self took an important decision by opening up and starting to build a different future.

The meditations of the past weeks in our Sangha gave more clarity. We live in connectedness, there is no separation between me and my environment, and there is also now separation between the past, present and future.

Everything manifests in cohesion, by causes and conditions.

When conditions are ripe, it will manifest.

A farmer that wants to harvest wheat to deliver to the miller and the baker, ploughs the field, plants the seed fully convinced that it will sprout and grow. The farmer knows that for healthy nourishing wheat, the soil needs to have the proper composition and care, knows how much water and sunshine is needed. And that it needs a lot of effort, patience and attention.

Some parts of the field are less fertile and need more care, some years there is not enough rain and there will be less fruit.

By continuous care and diligence born from insight, will the harvest be possible, not only for the caregiver but for the whole community.

By looking deeply (vipassana) and to contemplate, you see that the boundary between you and the world, between you and the other cannot be defined. Not in space, not in time. Your presence does not stop at your skin and has no limits in time. In the silence there is no role, there is no separateness, there is no goal, no win, no loose.

With meditation we allow the connectedness.

We become clear-minded again and see the world in a clear perspective.

From your true home you can allow the world in, in a dosed way, with compassion, trust and connectedness.

From our true home our actions and our presence become healing and nourishing, for yourself and your surroundings.

In this connectedness I wrote two letters, a thank you letter and a love letter.

A letter of gratitude to my roots and my younger self.

And a love letter to the world and my future self.

"Knowing that there is no separation between me and the world I wil take good care of us"

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.

I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,

Heartfelt regards,

Hans

Ongedeeld ++ Undivided

Ongedeeld.
Undivided.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"

Maandag 26 Oktober, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Thich Nhat Hanh benoemt: "I am home, I have arrived"

Harte groeten,

Hans

Undivided.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

One day the Buddha held up a flower before the people around him.

He said nothing and waited. Everybody was waiting too in anticipation of what he would say.

After a while one monk started to shine and started to laugh of joy of discovery.

He had seen the true nature of the flower.

The nature of no beginning and no end, of no boundary and no name. 'Not one not two'.

What is a flower? What belongs to the notion of 'flower' and what not. Does the stem belong to that? or the root?

What is the flower without water or earth, air or sunshine?

Thich Nhat Hanh uses the words: "A rose is made of non-rose elements".

With the discovery of the true nature of the flower, the monk had also seen the true nature of mind. We make separation and we give meaning, we form concepts and give names.

Reality, however is undivided, nature draws no borders.

We put ourselves on the wrong foot by our beliefs and definitions.

Meditation helps us to return to our true home.

It helps us to look and experience without opinion, without filter.

Be present, open and without judgement.

An opportunity to see reality as it presents itself, no labels, no preference.

An opportunity to investigate our own convictions.

In the silence there is no role, there is no separateness, there is no goal, no win, no loose.

The silence is also called emptiness (Sunyata), empty of hectic, empty of roles, empty of discrimination and separation.

In the words of Thay Cuong Lu: "Emptiness is your true home"

Thich Nhat Hanh has the mantra: "I have arrived, I am home"

In Emptiness, (in silence), there is the whole, the unseparated, the connectedness.

By looking deeply (vipassana) and to contemplate your beliefs, you see that the boundary between you and the world, between you and the other cannot be defined. Not in space, not in time. Your presence does not stop at your skin and has no limits in time.

Yet we act as if there is a separated self with a self interest.

With meditation we allow the connectedness.

We become clear-minded again and see the world in a clear perspective.

From your true home you can allow the world in, in a dosed way, with compassion, trust and connectedness.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.

I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,

Heartfelt regards,

Hans

De weg terug naar huis ++ Your way back home

De weg terug naar huis.
Your way back home.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 19 Oktober, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Thich Nhat Hanh benoemt: "I am home, I have arrived"

Your way back home.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Meditation as a way of life was the theme over the past weeks.
Meditation helps us to return to silence.
Meditation helps us to let go.
Meditation helps us to return to our true home.

A wonderful and nourishing experience.
When you look at it from the hectic of the day, it appears as if you have to do something to create silence.
When you look deeper it is the other way around.
In the silence we create the hectic of the day.
The hectic and the noise is what we create, it is what we do.
With what we do we break the silence.
From the silence we step on the stage and assume a role.
In the silence there is no role, there is no separateness, there is no goal, no win, no loose.

The silence is also called emptiness (Sunyata), empty of hectic, empty of roles, empty of discrimination and separation.
In the words of Thay Cuong Lu: "Emptiness is your true home"

Thuis in de storm. ++ At home in the storm.

Thuis in de storm.
At home in the storm.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 14 september, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Harte groeten,
Hans

At home in the storm.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
This summer I have spent a lot of time alone and in silence.
In a retreat in France, roaming with my small tent and on a sailboat.
The silence and the absence of sensory stimuli was nourishing and healing.
It took me however multiple days to take a distance and be at ease. There was every time a new message, or a curiosity, or a memory of an appointment to be made.
Also the world-news caused regularly anger and sorrow.
It startled me when I saw how much the world still occupied me. After that realisation, I have set myself on an e-mail diet, one hour a day.
After a few days it became easy. I noticed that many issues could wait. The biggest step was no news, and later-on only just enough to know what was going on.

Sometimes there is a storm, a storm outside us.
Sometimes there is a storm inside us.

How can you keep the relationship with the outside world without loosing yourself.
How can you observe the emotions and thoughts in yourself and not being overflown.
How can I say connected without closing off emotionally.

The practice that is offered to us by the Dharma is to go back to our breathing, coming home and feel your body again. Recognizing the connectedness with your roots, with life and experiencing that you are carried.
In the last words before his death, the Buddha said that your awareness, your mindfulness is like an Island onto yourself. A place where you are safe in the turbulent sea of emotions. A place that cannot be taken away from you and that is always there.
Your mindfulness is like a lamp, that shows you where you are and where you can place your foot for the next step.
Your mindfulness shows you that, with the Dharma, you are firmly rooted like a tree, by all your ancestors, all your teachers, and your environment. The storm can pull at the branches, but the stem is firm and stable by the roots in nourishing ground. You are not separated, you are carried.

The lesson I learned this summer is that through meditation and allowing the connectedness, I could slow down and reconnect. Get a clear mind again and gained a new perspective. And allow the world in again in a dosed way, starting from compassion and the confidence of connectedness.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Voeden van lichaam en geest ++ Nourishment for body and mind

Voeden van lichaam en geest.
Nourishment for body and mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 31 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Harte groeten,
Hans

Nourishment of body and mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
A candle will not burn without fuel and without oxygen. The flame needs nourishment. After you have put in the initial heat to ignite, the flame gives enough heat to keep burning.
This metaphor helps me often to investigate my thoughts and emotions. Sometimes there is an awareness: 'There is unrest in me'. or 'Melancholy', or 'Anger'. And of cause also: happiness, joy, and contentment.
Often I was not aware what had caused these feelings and thoughts. What the nourishment and conditions were for my feelings and thoughts.

The past weeks we have meditated and shared on how 'Contact' sets a process in motion in our mind. With the steps: Sense-inputs, Discernment, Feeling ((un-)pleasant, neutral), Naming and Acting.
Thich Nhat Hanh writes in "The heart of the Buddha's teaching" in chapter 7 (page 31) about four kinds of nourishments:
Edible food
Sense inputs
Will (intention, volition)
Consciousness.

these last two, I always found a bit difficult, but the following two examples show how I experience it these days:
Will (intention, volition) can be so strong that it directs your full attention and energy, a strong intention gives energy.
Your consciousness can recollect thoughts and emotions and bring them in your attention again. The thoughts and emotions can reenforce each other and in that way create their own 'truth'. For instance they can keep on feeding 'anger'.

Recently there was a newspaper article with an interview of someone that had been radicalized for quite some time, but now had been able to step out of that.
He told that by seeing the same kind video's over and over again, and sharing them within a group; and by listening to the same opinions over and over again, he saw that his disappointment became outrage. And slowly turned into
and indignation, anger and hate. He said literally: "We consumed each day our anger and with that we were feeding our hate. So strongly, that we did not see the other anymore as a person, but merely as an obstacle"
His way out of this whirlpool, this maelstrom turned out to be simple, but difficult and slow. He began to read other newspapers and information sources. Slowly a curiosity developed on why other people did not feel the same anger. Now after a long proces he could step back, and put things in a broader perspective, see things from multiple angles again.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Geluk zonder reden. ++ Happiness without a cause.

Geluk zonder reden.
Happiness without a cause.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 1 juni, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Happiness without a cause.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

The mirror that Thay Cuong Lu holds before us is:
'What is your image of happiness?' and 'What conditions do you need to be happy?'

This question is in our current day society the focus of the marketing experts and of social media.
This picture of happiness is painted in detail for us and filled in with all the bright colors.
One step back in a quiet moment and we can make a different list, however it is still a list.
We are strongly trained to define happiness by the measure of our sense experiences and all the conditions for our immediate environment in order to facilitate our sense of happiness. All volatile matters that depend on causes and conditions. With that our happiness is vulnerable and volatile. If one of the conditions fails or is absent, our happiness is absent.

In the Buddhist insights and practice, another happiness is central. A happiness that does not depend on causes and conditions. A happiness that is always there. A happiness that feels different, not volatile, but lasting and fulfilling. Maybe that is why we have so much trouble translating the Sanskrit word "Sukkha". Elements in Sukkha are: Wellbeing, comfort, ease (peace).

Happiness without a cause, without conditions, even in the midst of suffering.
Sometimes we experience this when everything falls apart:
The help of an un expected stranger in a difficult moment.
The birds and the sunlight on a freshwater creek that shows a glimpse of another world.
Holding the hand of a loved one that is critically ill and experiencing deep happiness.
Experiencing connectedness; wholeness; preciousness.
Leaving the images of happiness be, extinguishing of expectations and judgements, allowing silence and connectedness to be.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish us all a wonderous weekend in connectedness.

Warm regards
Hans
Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

This week we look at the fourth core aspect of the book that was published in 2023, by Thay Cuong Lu with the intriguing title:
Happiness is overrated: Simple lessons on finding meaning in every moment.
It is available at the publisher Shambala

Recently a summary was put on the site of Next Big Idea club with an audio fragment of Cuong reading the summary

On the site of Shambala is the quote:
Stop chasing happiness and reconnect to the meaning of each moment through this practical guide, told through vignettes of life training as a Buddhist monk under world-renowned spiritual leader Thich Nhat Hanh.

We spend so much time in pursuit of happiness—trying to purchase it, experience it, meditate our way toward it—but happiness is elusive and doesn’t last. According to the teachings of the Buddha, Cuong Lu writes, “Suffering is not a problem to be solved. It is a truth to be recognized.” Happiness Is Overrated invites us to look deeply at the truths in our lives—not glossing over or denying our suffering—and to focus on the meaning and value already within us.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 11 Mei, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Happiness is overrated.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

In 2023 a book was published by Thay Cuong Lu with the intruiging title:
Happiness is overrated: Simple lessons on finding meaning in every moment.
It is available at the publisher Shambala

On the site of Shambala is the quote:
Stop chasing happiness and reconnect to the meaning of each moment through this practical guide, told through vignettes of life training as a Buddhist monk under world-renowned spiritual leader Thich Nhat Hanh.

We spend so much time in pursuit of happiness—trying to purchase it, experience it, meditate our way toward it—but happiness is elusive and doesn’t last. It is a truth to be recognized.” Happiness Is Overrated invites us to look deeply at the truths in our lives—not glossing over or denying our suffering—and to focus on the meaning and value already within us.

Recently a summary was put on the site of Next Big Idea club with an audio fragment of Cuong reading the summary
A good occasion to spend time with the Sangha to study the 5 core insights from the book, by meditating and sharing.

This Monday we we will focus on the first insight, which is a translation of the first Noble Truth as taught by the Buddha:
Suffering exists, Suffering is a reality. He did not describe suffering as a problem; he called it a truth. Suffering is a part of life. It is not an anomaly; it belongs; and we can learn from our suffering.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Warm regards
Hans

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 13 April, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Wie heeft me leren lopen?

Warme groeten
Hans

You are the roots.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Who taught me how to walk?
How old is the Calcium in my bones?
Who showed me to look at the wonders of the world?
Who was and is a guide to me?

Am I aware of how much I received?
Am I aware of the wisdom and trust that brought me here?

Can I recognize what I pass on?

The invitation is to be present, open, with mindfulness, without judgement. Be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with mindfulness, compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share together about pure awareness of the cessation, the dissolving.
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Juiste inspanning ++ Right effort

Juiste inspanning,
Right effort.

Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 9 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juist (Heel - Heilzaam) levens onderhoud
Juiste (Heel - Heilzame ) inspanning

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.
In one sutta, the Buddha taught that every day a monk should take a little time to reflect thus "I am the owner of my kamma, the heir of my kamma; I have kamma as my origin, kamma as my relative, kamma as my resort; I will be the heir of whatever kamma, good or bad, that I do" (In Pali, it's spelt/pronounced kamma and not karma).

In Buddhism, a key teaching is that our life is very much in our hands. One may find ourselves in various circumstances, with multiple choices before us. We should understand that it is we who choose our decisions, our own speech and actions. One cannot put blame nor assign credit to any external agent.

The 6th factor of the Eightfold Path is Right Effort. One who practises the path makes the effort to bring forth skilful actions that have not been done and to maintain skilful actions that one is already doing. Motivated by wisdom and selfless compassion, Ven Pannakara and the monks decided this walk is the right thing to do. They have put their ideas to action. They are walking because they formed the idea to do so in their own minds. Like a flowing river, each wave followed by the next, these thoughts and decisions are the results of their past training in the tradition.   I offer these words for your reflection.

https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

Warme groeten

Right effort,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Regularly we ask ourselves in our meditation:
How am I present in this world, how is the world present in me.
The 5th and 6th aspect of the Noble Eightfold path is making this question more concrete, we are invited to look deeply into:
Right (Whole - Wholesome) livelihood
Right (Whole - Wholesome) effort
(for effort you can also read diligence)

Is there insight in my actions?
Is my presence based on the insight of interbeing, of No-self (selflessness), is it based on impermanence (Timelessness)?

This week there was a post on social media from the monks that are participating in the "Walk for peace":

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.

Like a flowing river, each wave followed by the next, these thoughts and decisions are the results of their past training in the tradition.   I offer these words for your reflection.

(Note pls read the Sansrit: Karma or the Pali: Kamma as: result of action)

On Wednesday the 11th of Februari the monks will reach Washington DC and a concluding gathering will be held. (ca 20h30 NL-time) Which can be followed on facebook.
The program and details can be found on:
https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

This period we are studying the 4four Noble truths:

There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by sharing his insight:
The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend,

Denken Spreken Handelen ++ Thought Speech Action 20260202

Denken Spreken Handelen,
Thought Speech Action.
Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 2 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juiste zienswijze (inzicht), Juist denken, Juist spreken, Juist handelen.

Quote from the monks:

“Today Is Going to Be Our Peaceful Day” - We can say these words lightly, like a pleasant thought that floats away, or we can make them real—transforming intention into lived experience. The difference is in how we bring them from abstract hope into practice.
This morning, while the day is fresh, let us try this: take a piece of paper and write with your own hand: “Today is going to be my peaceful day.” Then, read them out loud. Let your voice carry that intention into the air.
Why does this matter? Thinking alone is fragile; ideas slip away when distractions arrive. But when we think it, write it, and speak it, we anchor our intention. We give it weight. By engaging our mind, our hand, and our voice, we create a promise that is harder to forget when the day becomes difficult.
This isn't magic—it’s how commitment works. When we express our inner wishes outwardly, we strengthen our determination. Throughout the day, if frustration rises or stress feels overwhelming, we can remember: “I wrote it down. I spoke it aloud. I made a promise to myself.”
In that moment of remembering, we have a choice. We can let circumstances dictate our mood, or we can take a conscious breath and choose peace again. We do this not because everything is perfect, but because we decided this morning that today would be different.
This is how we move from wishing for peace to actually living it—through small, deliberate actions that remind us of who we want to be. Let us try it every morning. Think it. Write it. Speak it. And watch how peace begins to carry us through the day.
May you and all beings be well, happy, and at peace.

Thought Speech Action,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Today is going to be my peaceful day

At this moment 19 Buddhist monks are walking through a torn-up country.
In the middle of strong controversy and violence in the USA, these monks are doing walking meditation over about 3700km. From Fort Worth Texas to Washington DC.
A walk of 120 days with an average of about 30 km per day.
You can follow them on :  https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/
It is a peace walk, not a protest match, with the intention to bring our attention back to connectedness and peace.

The lead monk of the group was asked if he had an advise for people that want to help. His advise is simple and clear:
When you wake-up in the morning and get up. Before you read or say any thing, with a fresh blank and open mind, Take a sheet of paper and write by hand:
Today is going to be my peaceful day.

For me that is a very direct and concrete application of the Eigth fold noble path.
A clear simple application of the insight of how our mind works and how our thoughts, speech and actions shape the world we live in.
A moving application of:
Right view (insight), Right thinking, Right speech, Right action.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend,
Today is going to be my peaceful day
