Volgen of niet? ++ Follow or not?

Volgen of niet?
Follow or not?

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 3 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Onze mind krijgt voortdurend zintuig informatie.

Harte groeten,
Hans

Follow or not?

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When there is a knock on the door, do you open?
When the phone rings, do you answer?
You see something in the shop-window, do you enter?
When you smell something nice, do you eat it immediately?
There is a song on the radio you don't like, do you turn it off?

Our mind gets sensory information constantly.
Some inputs get our attention, get meaning and direct our actions. Often from habit and not by conscious choice.
Some stimuli we don't even notice, or we find them unimportant.
For example someone walking a dog in the corner of our field of view, or the background music in a shop.

As soon as we discern something and become conscious of it there is contact. In the Buddhist psychology this has been investigated and has been described in detail. In those situations the "Contact" starts (awakes) the attention, followed by a feeling (pleasant, un pleasant, neutral). This leads to an interpretation and a decision (wil)

This contact can be formed due to all our senses.
Our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and our mind.
Without intervention or further investigation this proces runs itself, on the basis of our experience and our habits.
There are a few moments in this chain where we can take a different turn on this path.
The moment our attention is awakened, we can deepen it. fi 'do I see or hear this correctly?'
The moment that the feeling arises: we can investigate if this feeling does justice to the situation and the reality of the moment.
In our interpretation we can consider if there is enough information for a conclusion.
Even so with the formation of 'will' : does it do justice to the situation, is it healing and nourishing.

More simply put:
Can you slow down, take a pause, look again, take a breath.
Can you stay with your stability, stay at your source, can you keep the clarity of your mind or restore it. Do you have enough space to let your heart speak. Certainly when a situation hits you emotionally or brings you out of balance

Your mind is so eager to chase the thoughts, that it looks almost impossible to stay at rest.
Observing the 'disturbances' and the 'grabbing' by the mind, helps you to observe that there is an empty and silent space.
You can smile to the thoughts and and the mental constructs.
Observations are just observations, meaning is constructed by our mind.

Learn to see and recognize that you, yourself are OK. That you are that silent and stable space.
Your breath, your loving non-judgmental attention and compassion form a bedding, a safe space. It is as if you put the marble in the hollow side of the spoon.
There are disturbances, you observe them, smile and return.
Use the space, the stability and the wisdom that is already in you.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Vrijmaken van de geest ++ Liberate the mind.

Vrijmaken van de geest.
Liberate the mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 13 July, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

https://plumvillage.org/library/sutras/discourse-on-the-full-awareness-of-breathing
en in het Nederlands:
'Adem is bewustzijn'

Harte groeten,
Hans

Liberate the mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Our mind is constantly with us. We are used to it and we rely on it.
We hardly notice what our mind does for us.
Observing and discerning,
Thinking, deliberating and deciding.
Storing and retrieving.
All this activity goes on almost unnoticed.

The Sutra's and the meditation exercises help us to see through the daily illusions and to see our automatisms and attachments. It helps us to experience our freedom, our connectedness and happiness, irrespective of circumstances.

The past weeks we have brought our attention to the first 8 exercises from the sutra on mindful breathing :
https://plumvillage.org/library/sutras/discourse-on-the-full-awareness-of-breathing

This Sutra brings us back to our breathing, to our body.
In 16 meditation lines, the sutra is demasking our thinking, and lets you experience that you are free, that you are OK the way you are and that we are inter-connected.

The first four are about stopping, breathing and calming the body. The 5th to the 8th  are about experiencing joy and happiness and the calming of the mind.
In our mind feelings, thoughts and emotions manifest. These are constructions, products of (by) the mind. They are absent, emerge, are present for a while and dissolve again.
The 9th to the 12th involve the mind itself. Observing how our mind works and what it deals with.
As soon as you stop and bring all your attention to your breathing and how your body is receiving and giving back the breath, you experience a space and peacefulness. In this space, thoughts and emotions rise, stay a while and extinguish again.
By being present with our breathing and loving kindness, we can recognize the space in which our thoughts and emotions arise and dissolve. We can recognize that this space enables us to live and experience.
By smiling and breathing, your body and also your mind calms down.
We can observe that we can direct our attention and concentrate our mind. And that we are not our thoughts and emotions, we are much larger and deeper. We are free.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Geluk zonder reden. ++ Happiness without a cause.

Geluk zonder reden.
Happiness without a cause.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 1 juni, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Happiness without a cause.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

The mirror that Thay Cuong Lu holds before us is:
'What is your image of happiness?' and 'What conditions do you need to be happy?'

This question is in our current day society the focus of the marketing experts and of social media.
This picture of happiness is painted in detail for us and filled in with all the bright colors.
One step back in a quiet moment and we can make a different list, however it is still a list.
We are strongly trained to define happiness by the measure of our sense experiences and all the conditions for our immediate environment in order to facilitate our sense of happiness. All volatile matters that depend on causes and conditions. With that our happiness is vulnerable and volatile. If one of the conditions fails or is absent, our happiness is absent.

In the Buddhist insights and practice, another happiness is central. A happiness that does not depend on causes and conditions. A happiness that is always there. A happiness that feels different, not volatile, but lasting and fulfilling. Maybe that is why we have so much trouble translating the Sanskrit word "Sukkha". Elements in Sukkha are: Wellbeing, comfort, ease (peace).

Happiness without a cause, without conditions, even in the midst of suffering.
Sometimes we experience this when everything falls apart:
The help of an un expected stranger in a difficult moment.
The birds and the sunlight on a freshwater creek that shows a glimpse of another world.
Holding the hand of a loved one that is critically ill and experiencing deep happiness.
Experiencing connectedness; wholeness; preciousness.
Leaving the images of happiness be, extinguishing of expectations and judgements, allowing silence and connectedness to be.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish us all a wonderous weekend in connectedness.

Warm regards
Hans
Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

This week we look at the fourth core aspect of the book that was published in 2023, by Thay Cuong Lu with the intriguing title:
Happiness is overrated: Simple lessons on finding meaning in every moment.
It is available at the publisher Shambala

Recently a summary was put on the site of Next Big Idea club with an audio fragment of Cuong reading the summary

On the site of Shambala is the quote:
Stop chasing happiness and reconnect to the meaning of each moment through this practical guide, told through vignettes of life training as a Buddhist monk under world-renowned spiritual leader Thich Nhat Hanh.

We spend so much time in pursuit of happiness—trying to purchase it, experience it, meditate our way toward it—but happiness is elusive and doesn’t last. According to the teachings of the Buddha, Cuong Lu writes, “Suffering is not a problem to be solved. It is a truth to be recognized.” Happiness Is Overrated invites us to look deeply at the truths in our lives—not glossing over or denying our suffering—and to focus on the meaning and value already within us.

Happiness is overrated ++ Geluk is overgewaardeerd (part 2)

Happiness is overrated.
Geluk is overgewaardeerd.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 18 Mei, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Is mijn verwachting, mijn beeld realistisch?

Citaat:

In raw mind, there is no good or bad, right or wrong. There is no separation between you and others, only the seamless continuity of interbeing. Everything simply is. Raw mind is a sanctuary deep within us, an oasis of peace. The path of practice helps move our point of reference from ordinary mind to raw mind.
Alles is gewoon.

Warme groeten
Hans

Happiness is overrated.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

It is difficult to step away from our habits.
Un-learning seems to be harder that learning.

Our mind is very clever in finding and adopting patterns.
It makes recognizing situations easier and faster. This is particularly important for recognizing and acting on danger.
Also finding food and comfort is such an interest. Recognizing is easier then finding out and evaluating each time anew. Less energy is needed.
We have become by this habitual creatures. In the extreme we live on auto-pilot.
We train our mind on our habits our preferences. Conditioning is another word for that process.

Is there something wrong with conditioning? Nothing is wrong when you stay open for reality, and put in the effort to check: is it still correct. Is my habit still helping and healing? Is my image, my expectation still realistic?
And that's where the hook is, is our image of happiness or suffering correct? Is it really so that we are alone?
What if you could look without image or expectation?

This week we look at the second core aspect of the book that was published in 2023, by Thay Cuong Lu with the intriguing title:
Happiness is overrated: Simple lessons on finding meaning in every moment.
It is available at the publisher Shambala

Last week we looked at: What is suffering and what is happiness.
This week we concentrate on: What is mind.

The above introduction describes that our mind can be conditioned, that we live out of habit with our conditioned mind.
But what is the untrained, unconditioned mind? The raw and wild mind?
The raw unconditioned mind is in direct contact with reality, unfiltered, without expectation or judgement.

Recently a summary was put on the site of Next Big Idea club with an audio fragment of Cuong reading the summary
Quote:
In raw mind, there is no good or bad, right or wrong. There is no separation between you and others, only the seamless continuity of interbeing. Everything simply is. Raw mind is a sanctuary deep within us, an oasis of peace. The path of practice helps move our point of reference from ordinary mind to raw mind.

This Monday we will focus on the second core aspect of the book:
How are we in contact with reality?; Via our conditioned mind or do we look each time as new, without expectation or judgement?
Do we assess our situation in comparison with our desired image, or do we live with reality as it is.
Are we open for directly experiencing the world around us, including all beauty and all raw-ness and pain.

Are we open to "see" the connectedness, experience the equality that naturally brings compassion and brings solidarity.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Warm regards
Hans

Nirodha ++ Uitdoven ++ Cessation / Dissolving.

Nirodha ++ Uitdoven ++ Cessation / Dissolving.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 30 maart, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Gewaarwording zonder herinnering, plan of betekenis.

Warme groeten
Hans

Nirodha ++ Cessation / Dissolving.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Our daily language contains much wisdom.
There are deep insights in expressions:
"to be shackled"
"to carry a load"
It are strong pointers to what we do and how we experience suffering.

I invite you to ask yourself the question, 'Who or what is carrying the load', 'who or what is shackled'.
It is very easy and tempting to identify with what je carry, what you hold on to.
To truly meet yourself, to truly discover yourself, it is necessary to leave all images, memories, desires, judgements alone. It is like looking to the white between the letters.

Coming home to yourself, is returning to yourself.
You home is your starting point, your source.
Your home is always there, are yo there too?
Or are you distracted, swept away?
Returning home is letting go of everything that pulls you away.

Leave your thinking, your desires, judging, remembering, fantasizing be, let them float and move your attention away.
When you experience that the letters float in the white, the images and concepts dissolve.
The extinguish, they cease to be, they dissolved.

Becoming aware without memorizing, planning or meaning.
When you let go of your thinking only the awareness remains.
For instance the awareness or your thinking, you become aware of your thoughts.
Or for instance the silence, you become aware of silence.
This is a space in which you become aware of what manifests or passes by.
This space is free of fear or loss, free of desire and aversion.

This space is like an island in the wild sea of thoughts and emotions.
A place where you experience stability.
Your mindfulness, your open , non-judgemental awareness helps you to make that step, to enter this space.
From that open space, from the open non-judgemental awareness, without memory or desire, you can observe yourself, the other, the world, the connectedness.
Your home, your source is connectedness, without separation.

The invitation is to be present, open, with mindfulness, without judgement. Be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with mindfulness, compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share together about pure awareness of the cessation, the dissolving.
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Returning home ++ Terugkeren in je thuis

Returning Home ++ Terugkomen in je thuis.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 23 maart, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Gewaarwording zonder herinnering, plan of betekenis.

Warme groeten

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Coming home to yourself, is returning to yourself.
You home is your starting point, your source.
Your home is always there, are you there too?
Or are you distracted, swept away?
Returning home is letting go of everything that pulls you away.

Your thinking, your desires, judging, remembering, fantasizing bring you to other places.

A way to let go of your thinking is to go back to pure observation, pure awareness.
For instance of the breath, or of the body.
Observing without judgement, without concept or expectation.
Becoming aware without memorizing, planning or meaning.
When you let go of your thinking only the awareness remains.
For instance the awareness of your thinking, you become aware of your thoughts.
Or for instance the silence, you become aware of silence.
This is a space in which you become aware of what manifests or passes by.
This space is free of fear or loss, free of desire and aversion.

This space is like an island in the wild sea of thoughts and emotions.
A place where you experience stability.
In the last Dharma talk before the end of his life as a human being, the Buddha advised us to trust the island inside ourselves. Even not to put your trust on anything outside yourself.
Your mindfulness, your open , non-judgemental awareness helps you to make that step, to enter this space.

The invitation is to be present, open, with mindfulness, without judgement. Be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with mindfulness, compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share together about pure awareness of the body and the breath.
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Aandacht op het pad ++ Mindful on the path

Aandacht op het pad,
Mindful on the path,
Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 23 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

De bestseller: "Thinking fast and Slow"  ("Ons feilbare denken")

Warme groeten

Mindful on the path,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When you become still what do you hear?
When stop and stand still, what do you see?
When you give (pay) attention, what do you feel?

Often we lack contact with the reality of the moment. In ourselves and around ourselves
Our perception of the world is by nature limited and flawed, because our senses are limited and flawed. But also because our attention is limited.
We take decisions all day without really looking. Often that is enough. But sometimes it is cutting corners and we bring ourselves and others in difficulty.

Buddhist psychology has investigated this deeply and described it in great detail (Ca 5th century CE). Our survival mechanism (Manas) has the strong skill to fill-in the missing information (to guess), so that we can respond quickly on danger. Also we can respond quickly to opportunities. That complementing of limited information is besed on our experience, our fears, or our desires. These seeds (Bija) of recognition lie dormant in our store-consciousness (Alaya). The quick respons is therefor not based on reality but on repetition (Samsara) of something we have experienced before. We get caught again.

With Mindfulness (Smrti. Open non-judgemental attention) you can re-examine the proces of "Perceiving, evaluating and deciding" or even redo this proces. Take more time, give more attention to what is happening and what you are doing, in you and around you.
Next to the fast proces, there is an more accurate (slower) proces too.

In western literature this is recently described in a book.
The bestseller: "Thinking fast and Slow"

Open non-judgemental attention brings you into contact with what is there. Your direct perception, buts also your misconceptions, your hurry, your pain and your happiness.
We are so used to be driven by our environment that for most people it is a challenge to step out of this whirlwind. It takes courage and trust to step out, to stop (Samatha) en come home to yourself.
The silence is a blessing, the attention for your tea is a gift, perceiving connectedness is a present.

What happens next comes natural:
When you become still what do you hear?
When stop and stand still, what do you see?
When you give (pay) attention, what do you feel?

Becoming still and listen gives you the opportunity to enjoy, but also to take care of what you didn't notice, what you disregarded or pushed away.

When you go on a walk, it is wise to sit down for a moment and take the rock out of your shoe and take care of your foot. When you ignore it it can lead to damage.
And as a bonus, when you sit down you notice how tired you are.

This period we are studying the 4four Noble truths:

There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by sharing his insight:
The past and the future are only present in our mind. And the present moment we can only comprehend in part.
The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

The invitation is to be present, open, with mindfulness, without judgement, from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with mindfulness, compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend,
Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Juiste inspanning ++ Right effort

Juiste inspanning,
Right effort.

Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 9 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juist (Heel - Heilzaam) levens onderhoud
Juiste (Heel - Heilzame ) inspanning

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.
In one sutta, the Buddha taught that every day a monk should take a little time to reflect thus "I am the owner of my kamma, the heir of my kamma; I have kamma as my origin, kamma as my relative, kamma as my resort; I will be the heir of whatever kamma, good or bad, that I do" (In Pali, it's spelt/pronounced kamma and not karma).

In Buddhism, a key teaching is that our life is very much in our hands. One may find ourselves in various circumstances, with multiple choices before us. We should understand that it is we who choose our decisions, our own speech and actions. One cannot put blame nor assign credit to any external agent.

The 6th factor of the Eightfold Path is Right Effort. One who practises the path makes the effort to bring forth skilful actions that have not been done and to maintain skilful actions that one is already doing. Motivated by wisdom and selfless compassion, Ven Pannakara and the monks decided this walk is the right thing to do. They have put their ideas to action. They are walking because they formed the idea to do so in their own minds. Like a flowing river, each wave followed by the next, these thoughts and decisions are the results of their past training in the tradition.   I offer these words for your reflection.

Right effort,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Regularly we ask ourselves in our meditation:
How am I present in this world, how is the world present in me.
The 5th and 6th aspect of the Noble Eightfold path is making this question more concrete, we are invited to look deeply into:
Right (Whole - Wholesome) livelihood
Right (Whole - Wholesome) effort
(for effort you can also read diligence)

Is there insight in my actions?
Is my presence based on the insight of interbeing, of No-self (selflessness), is it based on impermanence (Timelessness)?

This week there was a post on social media from the monks that are participating in the "Walk for peace":

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.

(Note pls read the Sansrit: Karma or the Pali: Kamma as: result of action)

On Wednesday the 11th of Februari the monks will reach Washington DC and a concluding gathering will be held. (ca 20h30 NL-time) Which can be followed on facebook.

Liberating thought ++ Bevrijd denken 20260126

Liberating thought ++ Bevrijd denken.
Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 26 Januari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Gedachten houden me vaak gevangen,
gedachten laten me vaak verdwalen.

Contemplatie: Juiste Mindfulness, Juiste Concentratie, Juiste zienswijze (Inzicht)
Handelen: Juist denken, Juist spreken, Juist handelen.
Toewijding: Juist levensonderhoud, Juiste ijver
Juist (Samyak) is hier compleet, kloppend.

Warme groeten
Hans

Liberating thought,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

Thoughts often keep me prisoner,
thoughts often lead me astray.
Thoughts also have the power to liberate and to bring us home.
Liberating thoughts are rooted in Insight (Right view).

Our capacity to think has brought us a lot as species, both beauty and love, as well as damage and pain.
Thoughts originating from Insight are rooted in the reality of inter-being and in non-self and in impermanence.
Wholesome thinking is made of connectedness and emptiness, it brings compassion.
Un-wholesome thinking ignores connectedness and holds on to a separate self, and tries to circumvent impermanence. Un-wholesome thinking brings loneliness.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

Sometime ago, I found myself in a serious conflict-situation, I felt numb and isolated. I felt constricted, as if I was not allowed to be there and if I could not move.
By returning home to myself, to the source, I could recognize which thoughts and convictions had formed my prison. Both parties in the conflict had different goals and approaches. We also had different goals in life. Our collaboration was build on the illusion that we were in agreement. That was painful for the other party too. This was a liberating insight for me. I could let go of the constricting thoughts.
The pain transformed into grief, grief for the loss of an illusion.
The grief also gave freedom, the fighting had stopped and there manifested space for a new direction.
I felt stronger connected to the source than ever and felt more free to make steps on the new road.

In Buddhism you are invited to look deeply into reality, to the experiences you have and how these experiences come to be.
Looking deeply if your perceptions are pure and complete, if there are convictions in you that hinder you to perceive openly.
Looking deeply to see if your thinking is pure and rooted in the reality of non-discrimination.

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by sharing his insight:
When you look closely, you see that everything is interwoven. We inter-are.
You can see that all separation is made by our mind and that collections (aggregates) form and dissolve. Also the construction of our precious "Self" ("Me" or "I").
Nature does not give labels, or names. And what we give a name, we can never describe in full.

The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

We have received the eight-fold path. Eight interconnected aspects of the Buddhist way of life. Each step feeds all other; And each step is supported by all other.
Contemplation: Right Mindfulness, Right concentration, Right View (Insight).
Action: Right Thinking, Right Speech, Right action.
Dedication: Right Livelihood, Right diligence.
Right (Samyak) here means complete, correct. Right here is not a judgement, but an experienced wholeness.

These 8 elements give you tips for your life, form an ethic that is a conclusion from insight. They are nourishment for your personal moral guidance, your personal aspiration.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of beauty, gratitude, connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Ethics born from insight ++ Ethiek uit inzicht

Ethics born from insight,
Receiving the four noble truths.
Ethiek uit inzicht,
Ontvangen van de vier edele waarheden.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 19 Januari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Contemplatie
Handelen
Toewijding

Contemplatie: Juiste Mindfulness, Juiste Concentratie, Juist Inzicht
Handelen: Juist denken, Juist spreken, Juist handelen.
Toewijding: Juist levensonderhoud, Juiste ijver
Juist (Samyak) is hier compleet, kloppend.

Warme groeten
Hans

Ethics born from Insight,
Receiving the four noble truths.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

How can I have a good life?
How can we have a good life?

This is a question that each one of us have encountered in our lives, probably even very often.
There are also many answers to this question.
It is a puzzle, a quest that is difficult to escape.

The wording of the question is even interesting in itself: What is good?, What is life?, What and who am I?, The question "How" suggests that there is a method. And the word "Have" suggests a possession or appropriation.

What does this question mean to you, to me, to us, to others, to the world?
Is there 'an' answer? Is that answer constant over time?
Where does an answer come from.

In Buddhism you are invited to look deeply into reality, to the experiences you have and how these experiences come to be.
Looking deeply if your perceptions are pure and complete, if there are convictions in you that hinder you to perceive openly.
The insights of our ancestors and teachers are a tool, an aid, to go look your self and find your own insights.
(Here it is important to note the difference between Knowledge and Insight. Knowledge is something you adopt or copy, Insight is what appears, emerges)

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by the tip:
When you look closely, you see that everything is interwoven. We inter-are.
You can see that all separation is made by our mind and that collections / aggregates form and dissolve. Also our precious "Self" ("Me" or "I").
Nature does not give labels, or names. And what we give a name, we can never describe in full.

Walking the Buddhist path is to investigate, experience if you recognize this. If these insights also describe your reality.
From these tips, it is a small step to see our connectedness and vulnerability.
The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

On the basis of the above insight, the Buddha has named 8 elements to practice, in order to help you to reduce or prevent suffering and to experience happiness.
Together they form the 4th noble truth: the 8th-fold path.
These 8 elements come in three groups:
Contemplation
Action
Dedication

Hans
