Voeden van lichaam en geest ++ Nourishment for body and mind

Voeden van lichaam en geest.
Nourishment for body and mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 31 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Harte groeten,
Hans

Nourishment of body and mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
A candle will not burn without fuel and without oxygen. The flame needs nourishment. After you have put in the initial heat to ignite, the flame gives enough heat to keep burning.
This metaphor helps me often to investigate my thoughts and emotions. Sometimes there is an awareness: 'There is unrest in me'. or 'Melancholy', or 'Anger'. And of cause also: happiness, joy, and contentment.
Often I was not aware what had caused these feelings and thoughts. What the nourishment and conditions were for my feelings and thoughts.

The past weeks we have meditated and shared on how 'Contact' sets a process in motion in our mind. With the steps: Sense-inputs, Discernment, Feeling ((un-)pleasant, neutral), Naming and Acting.
Thich Nhat Hanh writes in "The heart of the Buddha's teaching" in chapter 7 (page 31) about four kinds of nourishments:
Edible food
Sense inputs
Will (intention, volition)
Consciousness.

these last two, I always found a bit difficult, but the following two examples show how I experience it these days:
Will (intention, volition) can be so strong that it directs your full attention and energy, a strong intention gives energy.
Your consciousness can recollect thoughts and emotions and bring them in your attention again. The thoughts and emotions can reenforce each other and in that way create their own 'truth'. For instance they can keep on feeding 'anger'.

Recently there was a newspaper article with an interview of someone that had been radicalized for quite some time, but now had been able to step out of that.
He told that by seeing the same kind video's over and over again, and sharing them within a group; and by listening to the same opinions over and over again, he saw that his disappointment became outrage. And slowly turned into
and indignation, anger and hate. He said literally: "We consumed each day our anger and with that we were feeding our hate. So strongly, that we did not see the other anymore as a person, but merely as an obstacle"
His way out of this whirlpool, this maelstrom turned out to be simple, but difficult and slow. He began to read other newspapers and information sources. Slowly a curiosity developed on why other people did not feel the same anger. Now after a long proces he could step back, and put things in a broader perspective, see things from multiple angles again.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

You are the roots. Je bent de wortels.

You are the roots.
Je bent de wortels.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 13 April, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Wie heeft me leren lopen?

Warme groeten
Hans

You are the roots.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Who taught me how to walk?
How old is the Calcium in my bones?
Who showed me to look at the wonders of the world?
Who was and is a guide to me?

Am I aware of how much I received?
Am I aware of the wisdom and trust that brought me here?

Can I recognize what I pass on?

The invitation is to be present, open, with mindfulness, without judgement. Be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with mindfulness, compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening we will meditate and share together about pure awareness of the cessation, the dissolving.
I wish us a wonderful weekend:

Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Helende voeding ++ Healing Nourishment.

Helende voeding,

Healing Nourishment.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 24 November, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Healing Nourishment.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When I was a student, I regularly was a bartender. Often till very late at night.
As the last one leaving, I had to close of the building. Looking at that, it was quite a responsibility to stay sober and clear and to see to it that everybody was safe.
That is why we received a training from the fire department to be able to protect the monumental building and the visitors.
Two things of the training always stayed with me. The first is the way, the intensity, with which that fireman talked to us. He talked from engagement, from true concern and care. Not patronizing, not angry or cynical. He spoke from true love for life, he had seen the devastating effect of fire. And he saw the vibrant carelessness of youth.
Now I recognize it as: He spoke from insight and compassion.
The second thing that stayed with me is the very simple and effective lesson: Fire needs 3 things to start or to stay: Fuel, oxygen, heat. Remove any one of those three and the the fire will extinguish, or will not start.

Last week we discussed that our will (intention) is a strong nourishment (fuel) for our behavior.
This holds equally for healing behavior as for destructive behavior.
The disarming love and trust of Martin Luther King and Thich Nhat Hanh work as 'incendiary'.
Next to this we see the intolerance an violence on the West Bank, in Sudan, towards the Rohingya, the Uyghur. Or closer to home: the polarization in our society and in politics.
What is the fuel, what is the energy, what are the conditions that starts this and keeps it going.

There are many metaphors in various cultures that refer to this:
In Buddhism: An Oil-lamp.
In the west: The gras is greener where you water it.
The native Americans: In us are two wolves, and angry and a caring one. The one you feed is the one that wins.

When we look at our body and mind we see that it is an assembly. (it is empty of a separate existence) Everything we collect, forms our body and mind. Everything we take-in is nourishment for our body and mind. This proces is called: becoming. You become the person that you nourish, by the meaning that you give to the nourishment. This is also the case for the people you meet and your environment.

Being aware of the true nature of the food we receive, by seeing that it is empty of meaning, we can stay free of a potential toxic effect.
When you give nourishment to others you can take care that there can be no misunderstandings about your intentions.

The practice that is offered to us by Buddhist insights is:
Can you be present with insight and compassion; for yourself, for those close to you, for those you meet, for nature.

In the Mind Only school, five contemplations are taken in mind before eating:
I see this food and I know where it comes from.
I am aware that many people in this world do not have enough healthy food.
I eat this food to give my body healthy nourishment.
I know that also my mind needs healthy nourishment.
I transform this food in insight and compassion.

An interesting experiment is to read those contemplations before we turn on the TV, open social media or read the newspaper.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of beauty, gratitude, connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Lichaam en geest voeden ++ Nourishing body and mind

 Lichaam en geest voeden,

Nourishing body and mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 17 November, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Nourishing body and mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

"The fish sees the bait and is un-aware of the hook"

This metaphor helps us to keep our senses in "the safe zone" (eye, ear, nose, tongue, skin, mind) The invitation is to see reality, to look further than the immediate shortterm effect. To investigate the first impression of pleasant, unpleasant, neutral.

The past few weeks we studied "Emptiness" of perceptions.
A color is just a color, a shape is just a shape, they have no meaning in themselves, they are empty of meaning.
When we look at our body and mind we see that it is an assembly. (it is empty of a separate existence) Everything we collect, forms our body and mind. Everything we take-in is nourishment for our body and mind.

Being aware of what we consume and being aware of the nourishment of our body and mind helps us to become healthy and strong. When this does not come easy, we can help ourselves by guarding (or restraining) our sense-inputs. For instance we can choose to wait a while. Or we can choose to keep something outside our system, because we know what negative effect it has on us.
For instance you can choose to avoid intoxicants or hallucinating substances.
Another example is media content with violence and gossip. Or conversations with unconfirmed allegations or polarization.
The invitation is to investigate if something is nourishing and healing and if it is nourishing and healing for the other.

The Buddha has given five instructions (sila, precepts) as advise:
The fifth "Sila" is about Healing nourishment (for body and mind)
Are we aware of how we nourish our body and mind?
4 kinds of nourishments are identified:
*Edible food
*Information (from fi conversations, books, films, or other media)
*Our living environment
*Our will (as in determination, drive)

The question that reflecting our nourishment raises, is to investigate where we are free and where we are unfree. Are we being controlled by pain, fear, lust, or are we guided by love, caring, insight and connectedness. Do we choose to leave unhealthy food alone and do we choose for healthy, healing nourishment. for ourselves and for those around us.

Hans

Cuong Lu describes in 'Happiness is overrated' how concepts distort our view of the world and how our 'raw-mind' gets conditioned.

There are many formulations and applications of these instructions (see for instance 5MT), by continuous study and rephrasing to the current context, it becomes a living practice and it stays easy to connect to.
