Juiste inspanning ++ Right effort

Juiste inspanning,
Right effort.

Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 9 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juist (Heel - Heilzaam) levens onderhoud
Juiste (Heel - Heilzame ) inspanning

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.
In one sutta, the Buddha taught that every day a monk should take a little time to reflect thus "I am the owner of my kamma, the heir of my kamma; I have kamma as my origin, kamma as my relative, kamma as my resort; I will be the heir of whatever kamma, good or bad, that I do" (In Pali, it's spelt/pronounced kamma and not karma).

In Buddhism, a key teaching is that our life is very much in our hands. One may find ourselves in various circumstances, with multiple choices before us. We should understand that it is we who choose our decisions, our own speech and actions. One cannot put blame nor assign credit to any external agent.

The 6th factor of the Eightfold Path is Right Effort. One who practises the path makes the effort to bring forth skilful actions that have not been done and to maintain skilful actions that one is already doing. Motivated by wisdom and selfless compassion, Ven Pannakara and the monks decided this walk is the right thing to do. They have put their ideas to action. They are walking because they formed the idea to do so in their own minds. Like a flowing river, each wave followed by the next, these thoughts and decisions are the results of their past training in the tradition.   I offer these words for your reflection.

https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

Warme groeten

Right effort,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Regularly we ask ourselves in our meditation:
How am I present in this world, how is the world present in me.
The 5th and 6th aspect of the Noble Eightfold path is making this question more concrete, we are invited to look deeply into:
Right (Whole - Wholesome) livelihood
Right (Whole - Wholesome) effort
(for effort you can also read diligence)

Is there insight in my actions?
Is my presence based on the insight of interbeing, of No-self (selflessness), is it based on impermanence (Timelessness)?

This week there was a post on social media from the monks that are participating in the "Walk for peace":

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.

(Note pls read the Sansrit: Karma or the Pali: Kamma as: result of action)

On Wednesday the 11th of Februari the monks will reach Washington DC and a concluding gathering will be held. (ca 20h30 NL-time) Which can be followed on facebook.
The program and details can be found on:
https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

This period we are studying the 4four Noble truths:

There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by sharing his insight:
The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend,
Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans

Denken Spreken Handelen ++ Thought Speech Action 20260202

Denken Spreken Handelen,
Thought Speech Action.
Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 2 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juiste zienswijze (inzicht), Juist denken, Juist spreken, Juist handelen.

Quote from the monks:

“Today Is Going to Be Our Peaceful Day” - We can say these words lightly, like a pleasant thought that floats away, or we can make them real—transforming intention into lived experience. The difference is in how we bring them from abstract hope into practice.
This morning, while the day is fresh, let us try this: take a piece of paper and write with your own hand: “Today is going to be my peaceful day.” Then, read them out loud. Let your voice carry that intention into the air.
Why does this matter? Thinking alone is fragile; ideas slip away when distractions arrive. But when we think it, write it, and speak it, we anchor our intention. We give it weight. By engaging our mind, our hand, and our voice, we create a promise that is harder to forget when the day becomes difficult.
This isn't magic—it’s how commitment works. When we express our inner wishes outwardly, we strengthen our determination. Throughout the day, if frustration rises or stress feels overwhelming, we can remember: “I wrote it down. I spoke it aloud. I made a promise to myself.”
In that moment of remembering, we have a choice. We can let circumstances dictate our mood, or we can take a conscious breath and choose peace again. We do this not because everything is perfect, but because we decided this morning that today would be different.
This is how we move from wishing for peace to actually living it—through small, deliberate actions that remind us of who we want to be. Let us try it every morning. Think it. Write it. Speak it. And watch how peace begins to carry us through the day.
May you and all beings be well, happy, and at peace.

Thought Speech Action,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Today is going to be my peaceful day

At this moment 19 Buddhist monks are walking through a torn-up country.
In the middle of strong controversy and violence in the USA, these monks are doing walking meditation over about 3700km. From Fort Worth Texas to Washington DC.
A walk of 120 days with an average of about 30 km per day.
You can follow them on :  https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/
It is a peace walk, not a protest match, with the intention to bring our attention back to connectedness and peace.

The lead monk of the group was asked if he had an advise for people that want to help. His advise is simple and clear:
When you wake-up in the morning and get up. Before you read or say any thing, with a fresh blank and open mind, Take a sheet of paper and write by hand:
Today is going to be my peaceful day.

For me that is a very direct and concrete application of the Eigth fold noble path.
A clear simple application of the insight of how our mind works and how our thoughts, speech and actions shape the world we live in.
A moving application of:
Right view (insight), Right thinking, Right speech, Right action.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

I wish us a wonderful weekend,
Today is going to be my peaceful day

Delen van geluk en dankbaarheid ++ Sharing happiness and gratitude

Delen van geluk en dankbaarheid
Sharing happiness and gratitude.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 29 December, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Sharing happiness and gratitude.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
You are connected, You are a Buddha.
Sometimes we forget and luckily the path back is always there and open.
By stopping and allowing the connectedness to be you can live in this richness.
This is the world that we can offer each other.
This is the connectedness in which we can lean and on which we can rely.

It only takes a few breaths to touch your true home, to let go of all your thoughts and afflictions. Home is always there. The Buddha, your Buddha nature is always there.
We do not have to go anywhere to arrive home, to touch your root.

This Monday evening  we will have a short meditation and use the rest of the evening to share together our happiness and our gratitude.
Everyone is invited to bring something that represents that happiness. That can be a song, a poem, an experience, an anecdote, an short text or a quote, a photo or music. It can also be something nice to eat. The most important thing is that it is an expression of your happiness and gratitude.

I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of beauty, gratitude, connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

How are you. ++ Hoe is het met je.

How are you.

Hoe is het met je.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 27 Oktober, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

I have arrived, I am home
In the here and in the now
I am solid, I am free
In the ultimate I dwell

How are you.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

How are you?

The thought probably crossed your mind that this often is a routine question. Or even sometimes a rhetorical question.
Often it is answered by: Fine, thank you, and you?

A special observation is : When and how doe sit really come to a an deep conversation?
It would be a nice investigation to find out.
Is it safe enough, is there space enough, is it really the occasion for this, There are other more urgent matters, Do I have clear enough vision on it myself, I do not want to complain, I do not want to be indiscrete, I don't want to stir things up, I don't want to make it bigger than it is. And sometimes even the fear: Can I handle the conversation or the situation.

The above appears to be about the conversation between two persons, but it can equally be applied to the encounter with yourself.
Meeting yourself during meditation, or just in a silent moment.

When we meditate we create a safe, open space, where your mind can rest and observe. You have everything in you to see, hear and think clearly. You are bigger, wiser and more stable than you think.

You can be your own best friend, you can make space and give support by your open friendly attention.
Meditation is making space, being open, patient, receptive. Like you are when you sit down at the edge of a clearing in a forest. Only when you are still and non threatening, the shy animals show themselves. Only than you can perceive what lives there.
When something reveals itself in you, the weak signal, you can care for it with compassion.

Can you observe without concepts? When you let go of concepts and meaning, what do you see?

The extinguishing (niroda) of images, expectations and opinions (concepts) brings you in undivided open space, where equality, openness and freedom get a chance. Where suffering and happiness are sides of the same coin and are received with compassion and gratitude.
When we let go of our concepts or convictions we have a chance to meet and discover the other.

Stopping separation, opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.
Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

With the insight of Inter-being and the extinguishing of concepts, you can live with mindfulness in nirvana. Thich Nhat Hanh has expressed that in this song:
I have arrived, I am home,
In the here and in the now.
I am solid, I am free.
In the ultimate I dwell

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

These insights are beautifully described by Thich Nhat Hanh in the book: 'The art of living'
Cuong Lu describes in 'Happiness is overrated' how concepts distort our view of the world and how our 'raw-mind' gets conditioned.

Detached from craving and discontent ++ Vrij van hunkering en ongenoegen.

Detached from craving and discontent,

Vrij van hunkering en ongenoegen.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 4 augustus, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

De indeling van de avond is:
19:15: voorbereiden van de ruimte
19.30: aankomen, thee en ontmoeting
20h00  Inleiding thema, geleide meditatie, loopmeditatie,
stille meditatie.

Detached from craving and discontent.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

How am I present in this world and how is the world present in me.
The past weeks we have meditated and share on how to deal with our surrounding and with our emotions and thoughts.

The Satipatthana-sutra gives advice on how to practice, with open non-judgemental awareness and insight:
[ .. ] detached from craving and discontent.
I experience this instruction as liberating, the discontent and craving do not have to go away. No fighting or inner struggle to suppress or remove them.
The invitation is to be free of them, "not-caught" by them.

The Satipatthana teaches also to have a clear awareness of reality. To see reality as it is, and how reality is present in us. In our body, our feelings, how our mind handles it, and on what our mind is directed.

Stopping of inner struggle opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.

Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.

I wish us a wonderful weekend , full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Een lotus voor jou, boeddha in wording. ++ A lotus for you, Buddha to be.

Een lotus voor jou, boeddha in wording,

A lotus for you, Buddha to be.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 28 juli, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Karin

A lotus for you, Buddha to be.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Needless to remind us that we live in turbulent times. The world enters our living room with gruesom images.
Photo's and video of starving children are burned into my retina.
How has that come this far, how did we let that happen?
Can we only be powerless by-standers?

In the big world events, we may be a small voice calling in the desert, a voice that is not heard.
But that does not mean we don't have influence at all.
Every day we are part of each others life and influence each others life, for instance with a simple smile. Very simple.
Last week, me and my friend went on a daytrip. And when we stopped for coffee, the people next to us reacted grumpy and dissatisfied to the personnel, to us and to each other.
It was just a small observation, but what if I could give them a lotus flower, and tell them: A lotus for you, Buddha to be? I couldn't do it, and still find it very hard to do. I felt such a distance.

Next day we went to the zoo. A completely different experience. Next to the animals, there were many people, young families, sometimes with grandparents. The weather was beautiful, I felt relaxed and happy, despite the fact that I was in pain due to my feet and back. I was like a child, exited and could not wait to see the sea-turtles, a highlight of the day.
If I had a bunch of lotus flowers I could have given them to every one we met, and say from the bottom of my heart: A lotus for you, Buddha to be !

Due to the pain , the trip costed me a lot of energy, but that day I could drink and refresh from the atmosphere that makes me happy. There are still enough places where we can be nourished by healthy energy. Exactly what we need in this turbulent world. We can support and nourish each other. We can be aware of our attitude and interaction with others. How am I present in the world?

The coming days I will pay attention and observe if I can say to every one on my path: A lotus for you!
An inner attitude of compassion.

Wouldn't that be a beautiful practice?

Wishing you a wonderful weekend with a lot of beautiful people around you.

Karin

Ksanti , Patience of the heart , Geduld van het hart.

Ksanti,
Patience of the heart,
Geduld van het hart.

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (GuanYin),
fully aware,
open and at peace with the world,
ready to act with compassion and wisdom.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 21 juli, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Ksanti. Patience of the heart.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
Some situations feel like they cut you through your soul. They feel like a stab in the heart. We call them unbearable.
A friend who is ill, a loved one that suffers. Or when something happens to your child. The incomprehensible cruelty and criminal behavior around us.
How to deal with that? How can we live with that?

The Dharma brings us a number of entrances.
In the moment of enlightenment, the Buddha realized something that became the first noble truth: There is suffering. The world, the reality is that there is sickness, old age and death. This cannot be avoided.
Also in the west numerous sayings on this are in use.

The Dharma teaches also us that a situation occurs when the conditions are sufficient. When conditions are no longer sufficient the situation changes.
Like the lamp, when there is oil, a wick, a starting flame and oxygen, the lamp will give light. If one of those conditions is not there the flame will not be there.
This helps us to become free when we cannot change the conditions. And help us to recognize the things we can do.
A saying  by Francis of Assisi is:
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

One of the six Paramita's (six wisdoms) is Ksanti, this can be translated as patience, but also as forbearance and also as forgiving.
When you cannot change the circumstances or the conditions, patience or forbearance is a wise step.
Bearing the unbearable.
We do what we can as human beings. Not looking away, present when we can change the conditions. Being with someone with compassion and solidarity is immeasurable.
Ksanti is a step towards inner peace. Stopping of inner struggle opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.

Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.

I wish us a wonderful weekend , full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Boddhicitta. Inclusive and wise heart. 20250714

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (GuanYin),
fully aware, open and at peace with the world, ready to act with compassion and wisdom.

BodhiCitta,
Inclusive Heart.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 14 juli, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten

The power of connectedness.
On June 15, I took this picture in den Haag, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion. That day I had felt lonely and powerless just until I stepped out of the train into the crowd.

BodhiCitta. Inclusive Heart.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
The Dharma brings us a lot.
It opens our eyes to reality, it shows us the connectedness of our lives and our essence.

Walking the Dharma path is an act of love and understanding, love for life, love for each other.
The Dharma is the path of insight and compassion.
That is not always easy, it is not always calm and happy.
The Dharma opens our eyes, also to the suffering, in us and around us.
Looking deeper into reality shows us that there is no: "My-suffering or Your-suffering".
The world is connected and inseparable. There IS suffering and to realize that, is already the path of the Bodhisattva. It needs courage to want to see the suffering.
The heart of the Bodhisattva is an inclusive heart and an open heart. A Bodhicitta.

Here is exactly where the tipping point is.
When something hurts, our first reaction is to withdraw, to close-off.
The raw reality of our days is very confrontational and painful. And when you close-off, the pain of loneliness is added to that.
When there is pain, it is necessary to take good care of the pain. (and sometimes withdrawing is the best action).
The Dharma helps us to take care of the pain, with insight. To come home, to re-connect with the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. The Dharma helps us to get to the root, the cause and conditions of the pain. And to become free.
The Dharma is the path of compassion AND insight.

The Dharma brings the insight:
** There is no separate self, there is a connected self. A separated self is suffering alone, defines "others" and thinks in "Us-Them". The connected self sees that "our happiness is my happiness, my happiness is our happiness, and your suffering is our suffering".

** WE give names to things. WE separate us from the rest. However, where is the border between "Tree" and "Non-Tree"? Borders, boundaries and names are illusions.

** We also make separations in time, we define a past and a future. We want to hold-on to the present or reject the present. It is in the denial of the connectedness that we cut our life in pieces. Wanting, and Wanting to hold-on creates nostalgia, grief and anxiety.

With that, the heart ( BodhiCitta) of the Bodhisattva is not only an inclusive heart, but also a wise heart.
A heart that sees the suffering and is capable of caring for the suffering.

Thay Cuong Lu regularly reminds us of the words of the Buddha:
"Without the Dharma, without compassion and insight, you are like a cow without skin. Prey to  insects and diseases."
The Dharma opens us, protects and heals us.

Mindfulness opens your heart, insight brings you to freedom.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.

I wish us a wonderful weekend , full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Lichaam en Geest ++ Body and Mind

Lichaam en Geest.

Body and Mind.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 12 mei, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Body and Mind.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
The expression Body and Mind holds already an assumption. It presents a separation. It presents two objects, a "Body" and a "Mind".
Those two objects are however not to be separated without severe consequences. Still we do this in our thinking.
The interwoven nature of body and mind becomes evident when you notice the physical responses on emotions, and for instance how long your mind is effected by the presence of substances in your blood. Like for instance Adrenaline, Caffeine, Paracetamol, Alcohol etc.
How is our relationship with our body?
Are we aware of this interwoven nature?
In Sanskrit the term Namorupa is used, which can be translated as BodyMind or Mindbody.

This Friday I received a message from Vivian. Vivian is one of the founders of this Sangha. For already several years she is severely ill. Her body is effected by ME.
The whole message can be read on Linked-in via this link:
