Volgen of niet? ++ Follow or not?

Volgen of niet?
Follow or not?

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 3 Augustus, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Onze mind krijgt voortdurend zintuig informatie.

Harte groeten,
Hans

Follow or not?

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

When there is a knock on the door, do you open?
When the phone rings, do you answer?
You see something in the shop-window, do you enter?
When you smell something nice, do you eat it immediately?
There is a song on the radio you don't like, do you turn it off?

Our mind gets sensory information constantly.
Some inputs get our attention, get meaning and direct our actions. Often from habit and not by conscious choice.
Some stimuli we don't even notice, or we find them unimportant.
For example someone walking a dog in the corner of our field of view, or the background music in a shop.

As soon as we discern something and become conscious of it there is contact. In the Buddhist psychology this has been investigated and has been described in detail. In those situations the "Contact" starts (awakes) the attention, followed by a feeling (pleasant, un pleasant, neutral). This leads to an interpretation and a decision (wil)

This contact can be formed due to all our senses.
Our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and our mind.
Without intervention or further investigation this proces runs itself, on the basis of our experience and our habits.
There are a few moments in this chain where we can take a different turn on this path.
The moment our attention is awakened, we can deepen it. fi 'do I see or hear this correctly?'
The moment that the feeling arises: we can investigate if this feeling does justice to the situation and the reality of the moment.
In our interpretation we can consider if there is enough information for a conclusion.
Even so with the formation of 'will' : does it do justice to the situation, is it healing and nourishing.

More simply put:
Can you slow down, take a pause, look again, take a breath.
Can you stay with your stability, stay at your source, can you keep the clarity of your mind or restore it. Do you have enough space to let your heart speak. Certainly when a situation hits you emotionally or brings you out of balance

Your mind is so eager to chase the thoughts, that it looks almost impossible to stay at rest.
Observing the 'disturbances' and the 'grabbing' by the mind, helps you to observe that there is an empty and silent space.
You can smile to the thoughts and and the mental constructs.
Observations are just observations, meaning is constructed by our mind.

Learn to see and recognize that you, yourself are OK. That you are that silent and stable space.
Your breath, your loving non-judgmental attention and compassion form a bedding, a safe space. It is as if you put the marble in the hollow side of the spoon.
There are disturbances, you observe them, smile and return.
Use the space, the stability and the wisdom that is already in you.

Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans

Dukkha Satya

Dukkha Satya,
Suffering is a noble truth,
Lijden is een edele waarheid.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 5 Januari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Thay Cuong Lu zegt daarover:

Warme groeten
Hans

Suffering is a noble truth.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
There is suffering !
This is a statement from the Buddha when he started his life as a teacher.
Pain, sickness, loss, old age and death are unavoidable; they are inseparable parts of life.
We suffer because we do not understand and fight against it.

Thay Cuong Lu says about this:
Suffering is not a problem.

We make it a problem by pushing it away and constantly strife for happiness. The norms we put on ourselves and the eternal strife gives us a focus on the "want", the falling short. It brings judgement.
Suffering and happiness are a construct, a consequence of a judgement, a preference.

We can suffer because we have a longing for an image, or a desire, or bring back something from the past. That is suffering of a repetition.
Or we can experience suffering as a reality, a human that suffers.
Suffering as a reality is not a repetition, it brings insight.

To see and acknowledge suffering and recognize it, gives relief and brings compassion. This is why the Buddha called the acknowledgement of suffering the first noble truth.
Noble here is meant as: precious, rich, because it brings a path to insight and compassion.

He also mentioned a second noble truth : Suffering has a root, Ignorance.
And a third noble truth: There is extinction of suffering. You can become free of suffering. (Dukkha niroda)

Our daily lives, the things around us, are there. They ask your attention, they lead you away. Our mind gives meaning, importance to it.
The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source.
Can you be in peace with what comes to you and be firmly rooted in your home.
Seeing reality without images or expectations.

There is suffering in the world, there is suffering in you. Seeing, recognizing and acknowledging of suffering means that you can say:
Darling, I see your suffering, I am here for you.

At the start of this new year we wish each other well, in line with the warm inclusivity of the Metta meditation.
Peace, health and connectedness for all living an non-living.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of beauty, gratitude, connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

How are you. ++ Hoe is het met je.

How are you.

Hoe is het met je.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 27 Oktober, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

I have arrived, I am home
In the here and in the now
I am solid, I am free
In the ultimate I dwell

How are you.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

How are you?

The thought probably crossed your mind that this often is a routine question. Or even sometimes a rhetorical question.
Often it is answered by: Fine, thank you, and you?

A special observation is : When and how doe sit really come to a an deep conversation?
It would be a nice investigation to find out.
Is it safe enough, is there space enough, is it really the occasion for this, There are other more urgent matters, Do I have clear enough vision on it myself, I do not want to complain, I do not want to be indiscrete, I don't want to stir things up, I don't want to make it bigger than it is. And sometimes even the fear: Can I handle the conversation or the situation.

The above appears to be about the conversation between two persons, but it can equally be applied to the encounter with yourself.
Meeting yourself during meditation, or just in a silent moment.

When we meditate we create a safe, open space, where your mind can rest and observe. You have everything in you to see, hear and think clearly. You are bigger, wiser and more stable than you think.

You can be your own best friend, you can make space and give support by your open friendly attention.
Meditation is making space, being open, patient, receptive. Like you are when you sit down at the edge of a clearing in a forest. Only when you are still and non threatening, the shy animals show themselves. Only than you can perceive what lives there.
When something reveals itself in you, the weak signal, you can care for it with compassion.

Can you observe without concepts? When you let go of concepts and meaning, what do you see?

The extinguishing (niroda) of images, expectations and opinions (concepts) brings you in undivided open space, where equality, openness and freedom get a chance. Where suffering and happiness are sides of the same coin and are received with compassion and gratitude.
When we let go of our concepts or convictions we have a chance to meet and discover the other.

Stopping separation, opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.
Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

With the insight of Inter-being and the extinguishing of concepts, you can live with mindfulness in nirvana. Thich Nhat Hanh has expressed that in this song:
I have arrived, I am home,
In the here and in the now.
I am solid, I am free.
In the ultimate I dwell

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

These insights are beautifully described by Thich Nhat Hanh in the book: 'The art of living'
Cuong Lu describes in 'Happiness is overrated' how concepts distort our view of the world and how our 'raw-mind' gets conditioned.

Ruimte om te helen ++ Space to heal.

Ruimte om te helen.

Space to heal.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 22 september, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Space to heal.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

"Only when I sat down I could feel how tired I was"
"I needed some time to catch my breath"
"I has been a tough period, we all shed some skin, but slowly we can relax again and look around"

The words may not come as a surprise to you, you may have used them yourself.
Humans are a powerful and resilient species. So powerful that we regularly run faster than our feet can carry.
The other side is there too, when the circumstances are rough, it turns out that we are more solid and capable of more than we thought.

There is however a difference if this power is rooted in willpower or in connectedness and trust. My experience is that moving on based on willpower often works, but in the end will have a high cost.

Our Buddhist practice gives us the option of "taking refuge".
An attempt to give that words would be:
Willpower originates from our mind (Our discursive thinking) and Taking refuge is rooted in our being.
When you take refuge, you enter a space that can be described as indivisible and  immutable. You let the world of separation go. You come home to your roots, your source.

A colleague who, with his family, was confronted with serious illness of his son told me this week:
"I can hardly give words to how we got through this together; The only thing I can think of is the word 'Love', we held each other with compassion and gratitude"

We can give space to connectedness.
In connectedness (non-separation) you are not alone an you can give the people around you space and support to heal.

You stop separation and judgement; You come home; You come home to your source.
In the words of Thich Nhat Hanh:
"I have arrived, I am home" In the safe place, where you do not have to up-hold or defend  anything.
Thay Cuong Lu says:
"You let go of your conditioned mind, and give room to your raw, unconditioned mind" You are open and receptive to become aware without discrimination (separation) or judgement. You are empty of separation.
As soon as you notice were you create separation, you also notice connectedness.

Life is a wondrous gift. A precious and unique present. You and I are a unique wonder. We have the opportunity to live without separation, with gratitude and compassion.

Stopping separation, opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.
Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend, full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Geen een, geen twee. ++ Not one, not two.

Geen een, geen twee.
Not one, not two.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 25 augustus, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Not one, not two.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Sometimes I pick up the photo album that my mother made when I was born. She lovingly put in photographs from the period that I was young. It moves me to see her handwriting and the small black and white prints. Memories, relics of precious moments.

During the meditation last week, a memory came of the first time I visited Plumvillage. Thay Cuong Lu was teaching and asked us to look at a photo from our childhood. And asked us: "Who is the person in that photograph? Is that someone else or is it the same person looking at it now?"

A follow-on question could be: Where is that person now?

It is a puzzle that confronts us regularly during our life. The presence in our mind is undeniable. As a memory, but also as a transmitted experience, insight, preferences and aversions. Sometimes in the foreground sometimes in the background.
When we become silent and leave the hectic of the day alone, we can observe, listen, connect; How is it present.

The life that I have now is given by the child in the photograph, my present self is the heir of the experiences and decisions from the past. There are decisions by my younger self, for which I and deeply grateful. Also there are decisions that had painful consequences, but when I look carefully, the younger self has always acted from the insight of the moment and with good intentions. Often under difficult circumstances and with limited or wrong information.
You are invited to connect and write a letter to your younger self. To express gratitude for all the care and effort. And also to forgive for everything that turned out differently.

Everything that manifests depends on causes and conditions. The present moment is made out of all causes and conditions of the past. Our ancestors, the formation of the earth, the seasons, the plants and animals. Also the future is made of causes and conditions, the future does not exist at all. It will be formed by our thoughts, our actions and all other (external) circumstances. The future will be formed.

You can also write a letter to your future self: "I will take good care of you"

How am I present in this world and how is the world present in me.
The present moment does not exist on its own, the past is not gone and the future is embedded in our presence. When you try to separate or isolate those three, you are doing something impossible.
When we accept that a human is porous and temporary, that boundaries (in time and space) are an illusion, there is nothing too cling to and there is nothing to cling with.
We are new and different in every moment. The person in the photo no longer exist, and when you look deeply, that person in the photo is still there. You and that person are not one and the same, but also not two different persons. It is our mind that makes the separation. When we look at ourselves and when we look at others.

Life becomes with that a wondrous gift.

Hans

Niets om vast te houden ++ Nothing to cling to.

 Niets om vast te houden

Nothing to cling to.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 11 augustus, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Nothing to cling to.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

How am I present in this world and how is the world present in me.
The past weeks we have meditated and share on how to deal with our surrounding and with our emotions and thoughts.

We read in the Satipatthana-sutra about how to practice, with open non-judgemental awareness and insight:
[ .. ] detached from craving and discontent.

Craving and rejection are strongly fueled by separation: Now and Later, There and Here, Us and Them. It is based on the borders that we create for ourselves, the images that we create.

What is the world? In Buddhist schools there is much attention to guarding our "Sense-doors". The clear and unbiased registration of what comes into our consciousness.

In her column in nrc-newspaper, the Writer-Philosopher Eva Meijer wrote in 2023:
The world flows through the porous humans. (in Dutch)
She refers to Philosopher Jane Bennet who wrote the book "Influx & Efflux".
Humans are Porous, the world flows in and out. Every encounter with the world changes us and changes the world. The separated self dissolves into a "Sea-self" that is constantly moving, flowing, breathing and changing.

Boundaries are created by us, including the definition of what belongs to the "Self" and what does not. The breathing of the world is re-locating and re-use.
When we accept that a human is porous and temporary, that boundaries are an illusion, there is nothing too cling to, and nothing to cling with.

Life becomes with that a wondrous gift. A precious and unique present. You and I are a unique wonder. We have the opportunity to live without separation, with gratitude and compassion.

Stopping of inner struggle opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.

Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend , full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

ready to act with compassion and wisdom.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 21 juli, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans
De bijeenkomst vindt Maandag avond plaats in de Schatkamer Mimosaplein 2

De indeling van de avond is:
19:15: voorbereiden van de ruimte
19.30: aankomen, thee en ontmoeting
20h00  Inleiding thema, geleide meditatie, loopmeditatie,
stille meditatie.

Ksanti. Patience of the heart.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
Some situations feel like they cut you through your soul. They feel like a stab in the heart. We call them unbearable.
A friend who is ill, a loved one that suffers. Or when something happens to your child. The incomprehensible cruelty and criminal behavior around us.
How to deal with that? How can we live with that?

The Dharma brings us a number of entrances.
In the moment of enlightenment, the Buddha realized something that became the first noble truth: There is suffering. The world, the reality is that there is sickness, old age and death. This cannot be avoided.
Also in the west numerous sayings on this are in use.

The Dharma teaches also us that a situation occurs when the conditions are sufficient. When conditions are no longer sufficient the situation changes.
Like the lamp, when there is oil, a wick, a starting flame and oxygen, the lamp will give light. If one of those conditions is not there the flame will not be there.
This helps us to become free when we cannot change the conditions. And help us to recognize the things we can do.
A saying  by Francis of Assisi is:
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

One of the six Paramita's (six wisdoms) is Ksanti, this can be translated as patience, but also as forbearance and also as forgiving.
When you cannot change the circumstances or the conditions, patience or forbearance is a wise step.
Bearing the unbearable.
We do what we can as human beings. Not looking away, present when we can change the conditions. Being with someone with compassion and solidarity is immeasurable.
Ksanti is a step towards inner peace. Stopping of inner struggle opens your heart and gives space for connectedness.

Coming home to the silence that is already in you, to the connectedness that is already there.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.

I wish us a wonderful weekend , full of connectedness and compassion.

Warm regards
Hans

Dankbaarheid en Compassie ++ Gratitude and Compassion.

 Dankbaarheid en Compassie

Gratitude and Compassion.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 19 mei, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Happiness and suffering are human emotions.
We are human and we are alive.
It is our human nature to be able to experience; To experience something as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral.
We also have it in us to see what is pleasant , unpleasant or neutral for others. We can even feel that, for instance when someone trips or bumps into something.
We also can feel joy when we see someone is happy.
Cuong Lu has called that in Dutch "Mede-blijdschap" which translates to something like "Co-happiness"

When you take a moment to reflect, apart of the turbulence of the day, you can see that we are connected, That we share this life and that we are part of each others life. That we are all humans that can experience pain, fear, peace and happiness.
We can help each other to remind that we are all equal in that.
We can help remember that there is a fundamental equality.

We see that people take decisions out of fear or pain, that have far reaching consequences.
We see that there is suffering and that we can reduce it with compassion and solidarity.

We can be grateful for life and be present for people that live with anger or fear. We can be present with compassion with people that suffer from injustice, violence, illness and famine.

Have a wonderful weekend full of connectedness and compassion
Warm greetings

Your inner freedom is a gift to the world ++ Jouw vrijheid is een kado aan de wereld 20250505

Your inner freedom is a gift to the world.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 5 mei, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Warme groeten
Hans

Your inner freedom is a present to the world.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
.
On may 5th we celebrate liberation day in the Netherlands.
Liberation from oppression, from discrimination, liberation of violence.

What I have learned from the Dharma is that my inner battles, my attachments (to for instance opinions) have a huge impact on my environment and the relationship that I have with my environment.
What could be a more appropriate present to the world than our inner peace. Our capacity to let go and be open.
To be able to smile at our craving and our aversion.
To be open and listen to the pain of other, unhindered by our own images.

We often highlight in human nature the elements of greed and fear, however we forget that included in human nature is also Buddha nature. Every human being has the capacity to love, to show compassion, to let go of their own pain.

That liberation day we can celebrate every day. Every moment that a conflict is resolved, or every moment that someone looks after an child or a human in need is a moment of liberation.
It is a present to, a light in the world.

Have a wonderful weekend full of discovery, connectedness and compassion
Warm greetings
Hans

Helende Stilte +++ Healing Silence.

Helende Stilte.

Healing Silence.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 30 April, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,
Mind and body, lichaam en geest helemaal aanwezig?

Warme groeten
Hans

Healing Silence.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
Being present, a simple notion.
In primary school the teacher counted if we were all present.
"Counting noses"
But does it mean that everybody is present?
Mind and body, fully present?

The first noble truth that the Buddha thought us is:
To see, to recognize and to acknowledge of suffering.
To see suffering as a truth, as a reality.
When you know and recognize suffering, insight and compassion arises.
And understanding and solidarity comes for the other, for the human in need.

Thich Nhat Hanh taught us: " Hello sorrow, my old friend! have you come to visit again? come sit with me and I will take good care of you"
By being really present and allow the connectedness you can see the pain and suffering in yourself and in others and take good care of it.

The body can be here, but the mind can wander to any place any time.
Can you be the witness of your feeling, of your emotion?
Can you truly be present?
Thay Cuong Lu wrote in his book Wait, about 'Witnessing' (see caption above)

The Buddha, The Sutra on the full awareness of breathing invites us to come home, to be present. To be a best friend for feelings, thoughts and emotions, and to take care for it, for yourself and for the people around you.

By being really present you can open up to the wonders of life.
The invitation is to become still, still of our opinions, still of our advise and open up to truly listen and to see the other.

Have a wonderful weekend full of discovery, connectedness and compassion
Warm greetings
Hans

Dankbaarheid voor onze wortels. ++ Gratitude for our roots. 20250421

Dankbaarheid voor onze wortels.

Gratitude for our roots.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 21 april, 2025   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

"You carry Mother Earth, you carry the sunshine, you carry the rain, everything.
This is not a 'me', this is a 'we'. We inter-are.
If we remove the element of parents, ancestors, food, education, air, water, there is no 'us' left.
So, 'we' means the whole cosmos."

Gratitude for our roots.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,
This weekend is Easter weekend, Christians commemorate the renewed life of Jezus of Nazareth. He visited his disciples in a new form after his crucifixion, he could be present and inspire them.

The Jewish people is commemorating the escape from Egypt, where they have lived for over 400 years. First as refugee, later as slaves. With the exit from Egypt a new life began, in which they had to discover their place and relation to the world again.

In every moment we say goodbye and we receive a new moment.
Every step that we made has brought us here. But also the whole cosmos and all our ancestors have prepared this path and made it possible.

We live because of our ancestors, our roots, that have nourished us and support us.

Sometimes it looks like a goodbye is final and absolute, however our roots are always there, they keep nourishing and supporting us.

Monday evening second day of Easter, we will meditate and share about our gratitude to our roots, for every new moment that is given to us.

- TNH, Silence: The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise

Happy Easter,
Hans
