Voeden van lichaam en geest.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"

Dierbare Sangha,
Harte groeten,
Hans

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.
Dear Sangha,
A candle will not burn without fuel and without oxygen. The flame needs nourishment. After you have put in the initial heat to ignite, the flame gives enough heat to keep burning.
This metaphor helps me often to investigate my thoughts and emotions. Sometimes there is an awareness: 'There is unrest in me'. or 'Melancholy', or 'Anger'. And of cause also: happiness, joy, and contentment.
Often I was not aware what had caused these feelings and thoughts. What the nourishment and conditions were for my feelings and thoughts.
The past weeks we have meditated and shared on how 'Contact' sets a process in motion in our mind. With the steps: Sense-inputs, Discernment, Feeling ((un-)pleasant, neutral), Naming and Acting.
Thich Nhat Hanh writes in "The heart of the Buddha's teaching" in chapter 7 (page 31) about four kinds of nourishments:
Edible food
Sense inputs
Will (intention, volition)
Consciousness.
these last two, I always found a bit difficult, but the following two examples show how I experience it these days:
Will (intention, volition) can be so strong that it directs your full attention and energy, a strong intention gives energy.
Your consciousness can recollect thoughts and emotions and bring them in your attention again. The thoughts and emotions can reenforce each other and in that way create their own 'truth'. For instance they can keep on feeding 'anger'.

Recently there was a newspaper article with an interview of someone that had been radicalized for quite some time, but now had been able to step out of that.
He told that by seeing the same kind video's over and over again, and sharing them within a group; and by listening to the same opinions over and over again, he saw that his disappointment became outrage. And slowly turned into and indignation, anger and hate. He said literally: "We consumed each day our anger and with that we were feeding our hate. So strongly, that we did not see the other anymore as a person, but merely as an obstacle"

His way out of this whirlpool, this maelstrom turned out to be simple, but difficult and slow. He began to read other newspapers and information sources. Slowly a curiosity developed on why other people did not feel the same anger. Now after a long proces he could step back, and put things in a broader perspective, see things from multiple angles again.
Monday evening we will meditate and share together.
I wish you a peaceful weekend, full of discovery and connectedness,
Heartfelt regards,
Hans
