Juiste inspanning ++ Right effort

Juiste inspanning,
Right effort.

Walking the 8-fold path.
Stappen op het achtvoudig pad.

Meditatie en uitwisseling in "de Schatkamer"
Maandag 9 Februari, 2026   (English below)

Dierbare Sangha,

Juist (Heel - Heilzaam) levens onderhoud
Juiste (Heel - Heilzame ) inspanning

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.
In one sutta, the Buddha taught that every day a monk should take a little time to reflect thus "I am the owner of my kamma, the heir of my kamma; I have kamma as my origin, kamma as my relative, kamma as my resort; I will be the heir of whatever kamma, good or bad, that I do" (In Pali, it's spelt/pronounced kamma and not karma).

In Buddhism, a key teaching is that our life is very much in our hands. One may find ourselves in various circumstances, with multiple choices before us. We should understand that it is we who choose our decisions, our own speech and actions. One cannot put blame nor assign credit to any external agent.

The 6th factor of the Eightfold Path is Right Effort. One who practises the path makes the effort to bring forth skilful actions that have not been done and to maintain skilful actions that one is already doing. Motivated by wisdom and selfless compassion, Ven Pannakara and the monks decided this walk is the right thing to do. They have put their ideas to action. They are walking because they formed the idea to do so in their own minds. Like a flowing river, each wave followed by the next, these thoughts and decisions are the results of their past training in the tradition.   I offer these words for your reflection.

Warme groeten
Hans

Right effort,
Walking the noble eight-fold path.

Meditation and sharing in "de Schatkamer" this Monday evening.

Dear Sangha,

Regularly we ask ourselves in our meditation:
How am I present in this world, how is the world present in me.
The 5th and 6th aspect of the Noble Eightfold path is making this question more concrete, we are invited to look deeply into:
Right (Whole - Wholesome) livelihood
Right (Whole - Wholesome) effort
(for effort you can also read diligence)

Is there insight in my actions?
Is my presence based on the insight of interbeing, of No-self (selflessness), is it based on impermanence (Timelessness)?

This week there was a post on social media from the monks that are participating in the "Walk for peace":

A popular saying among Buddhists is "If you wish to know the nature of your actions in the past, look at your present moment.
And to know what your future will be like, again, look at your actions in the present moment."
We also say Sadhu to rejoice and to praise the actions of others.

(Note pls read the Sansrit: Karma or the Pali: Kamma as: result of action)

On Wednesday the 11th of Februari the monks will reach Washington DC and a concluding gathering will be held. (ca 20h30 NL-time) Which can be followed on facebook.
The program and details can be found on:
https://dhammacetiya.com/walk-for-peace/washington-dc-updates-2/

This period we are studying the 4four Noble truths:

There is suffering,
there is the rising of suffering
there is extinction of suffering
there is a path to the extinction of suffering.

The Buddha has helped us to get on our way by sharing his insight:
The other is no 'other', the other is an inseparable part of you.
When you hurt the other, you hurt yourself. When you help the other, you help yourself.
These sentences are the consequence of the insight, not dogma.
Insight brings you to compassion and solidarity.

Suffering has no owner and happiness has no boundary.

The invitation is to be present from your true home, from your source. Allow the connectedness to be. You are invited to connect to reality, to investigate, to lead your life with compassion, with clear insight.

This Monday evening  we will meditate and share together.
I wish us a wonderful weekend,
Today is going to be my peaceful day

Warm regards
Hans
