The gift of openness.
Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything, That’s how the light gets in (leonard cohen) Dear Friends Friday morning, I enjoyed a beautiful encounter during a long walk on the Strabrechtse Heide with one of my best friends, Eric. Our last meeting was six months ago, on the same spot, but we continued our conversation as if it was yesterday. One of the subjects was ‘to be completely open’. Open heart, open mind, open view. He shared an experience during is holiday on Corsica, with a friend. They were at a lonely bus stop. The next bus will depart 6 hours later. What to do? At that moment, a car stops. A man steps out of the car, smokes a cigarette. In Eric’s mind a possibility popped up. Maybe he can give us a lift, if it is even just to a small city with something do to. He walked slowly to the car, a bit hesitantly. The men get in the car, starts the engine. Fast forward, head through the window of the car and asked for a lift. In the end, the car driver made a big detour and brought them to their destination. There was an inspiring exchange between the four people in the car with different backgrounds and that was the fuel of this action. Later this Friday I got the insight that such a small event – the smoke break from the driver- has a on going effect. Eric was on the starting point of a challenging multi-day walk and I imagined that he started with more energy, because he hadn’t had to hang around by a bus stop where there was nothing do to and maybe some exhaustion. So now he could use that energy in climbing the mountains. And perhaps, during the conversation, there was some remark that touched the driver of his friend and plans now to do something on his bucket-list. There is also this continuation: yesterday it was a good topic during the walk, now it is my inspiration for this invitation. And who knows, how this wave will continue in your life, als you are reading this. The pebble in the pond. The ripple-effect. Interbeing. Interconnectedness. To be alert on this small beam of light in the cracks of a moment. A clear and concrete teaching why it is so important to be present in this moment. Every moment is a wonder, a chance. Openness in two directions: in that what you see on your path and that what rises inside you. Eric and I have a common interest: how to connect young people to their potential? He with interactive ‘performances’, me with lessons and workshops. After one of his ‘performances’ a young girl, 12-year-old, steps out of her group, she has a few moments, because she belongs to the group. ‘Eric’, she asks with a very clear energy in her eyes, ‘how do I find my flow?’ Eric starts to answer, but halfway the girl thanks him because the group is out of sight. That question of this girl was the spark for a very interesting exchange between the two of us about now forms, insights, next steps, new metaphors. This summer, Plum Village celebrates a 40 years anniversary. A challenging theme: “Now we have a path”. Very powerful. Maybe a good practice: can you be mindfull, open, alert, present with all that crosses your path? As a gift of this moment? As a gift of live? And, on the other shore, can you be aware of the continuation, the effect of your actions in other people? That you set things in motion? What you think, speak, act at this moment is creating the future. On my desk this morning is a small book of Edel Maex. In Dutch: de bereidheid om te kijken (English: the willingness to look deeply?). He mentions two aspects of this openness. Insight and compassion. Insight, that you are willing to see things that you would otherwise miss (or don’t want to see?). Compassion because, by the willingness of deep looking you are open, vulnerable, wanting to be touched, moved. To look deeply with an open heart and an open mind. The willingness to learn. A small crack in that what you expect to see of happen? Beginners mind. Can you see it? Do you have the courage to see it? I wish you a sunny weekend with insight and compassion. Maybe I see you on our coming Sangha meditation, on Monday evening. Joost Vriens
NB: Because of the holiday-period, there will be no Online Sangha from July, 11 until August 1st. You can join the live Sangha at the Schatkamer. |
