Happiness is here and now, Stabiel geluk in ups en downs

Dierbare Sangha, Dear Sangha (english below)

'Mud AND Lotus'

"Happiness is here and now"

Hans

Dear Sangha,
The mantra No Mud No Lotus , sometimes confuses me.
As if I have to wait or endure the mud to finally get the lotus.
Life is not divided but one whole and it is not like a menu where you can just select the things you like.
For me the practice now is to look at "Mud AND Lotus"; can I enjoy life as it is, as it comes to me without judgement and with compassion and gratitude.
The insight of "Interbeing and Emptiness" show that there is no separation.
the sentences "I suffer or My happiness" become strange and awkward when you think that the boundary of "I or me" does not exist. When you can realize that you are no longer alone (with your pain and joy)

Monday Januari 15 we will have our Sangha evening at the Mimosaplein, starting 19h15 with preparing the room.
Meditation starts at 20h

Warm regards, enjoy the fresh winter day !!

Mindfulness meditation: Prepare for winter and Warm friendship for Anna

Dear Friends,

One of the strong images in the movie 'Walk with me' are the bare trees in the fall against the gray sky, together with the quote from the (1962) diary of Thich Nhat Hanh:
'When Icy winter comes, it is unforgiving .... seeing the courageous, solid way that trees prepare for winter helps me to appreciate the lessons I've learned'
(  quote DD Dec 21-1962 Princeton New Jersey)

This Monday evening (Dec-11th) our Sangha meditation will be on the preparation for winter, we know that life is bringing us much joy, beauty and richness and at the same time, brings us pain, fear and grief.
How are you preparing for winter?
Are you able to touch the feeling of spring in you in the middle of a ice cold night?
Can you generate your confidence in your roots and firm connection to the earth when the icy storm is pushing and pulling your branches?

We practice to be firmly rooted in healthy solid ground with our roots:
Our roots in our community
Our roots in our family
Our roots in our spiritual teachings

During our Sangha evening we generate warm loving friendship for Anna. Our dear Sangha member who is facing a new stage in her illness, where the medication is no longer having effect.

We gather Monday night December 11th at Mimosaplein 2
at 19h15 to set up the room and make tea.
at 19h30 there is tea and opportunity to meet and relax.
Meditation will start at 20h
followed by Dharma sharing at about 21h
Please be aware that it will be chilly in the meditation room.

We wish you a wondrous weekend,
enjoy your friendships and the beauty that surrounds us,

Hans

The quote is from:
Thich Nhat Hanh, Fragrant palm leaves, The journal of Thay of 1962 till 1966
in Dutch translation:

Peace work is anger work. Anger work is peace work. Werken aan vrede is werken aan boosheid. Werken aan boosheid is werken aan vrede.

Beste Vrienden,

Hartelijke groet
Joost Vriens

Dear friends
Cordially I invite you to join our Sangha on Monday November 20th  in de Schatkamer, Mimosaplein 2, Eindhoven.

During the dharma-sharing last  Monday we shared about dealing with anger as an example of a powerful, sometimes very determining emotion. How can you be a ' good ' practitioner if you regularly note that the anger gets the upper hand?
We come together to return to ourselves, to share insights and practice. The insight for this Sangha meeting  is reflected in the following story.

The Duel

In a small remote village in Japan lived an old master at sword fighting. He was never defeated and trained many students in the art of sword fighting.
One day a young Swordsman visited the village, determined to engage in a duel with master and be the first to beat him. The specialty of this young swordsman was the use of even the smallest  weakness of the opponent.

The master took up the challenge with a smile. When the two swordsmen met, the young man started immediately to hassle  after the greeting . "Your reputation is empty, you don't even know how to hold a sword properly, I do not understand that no one has told you that you are worthless, a disgrace in sword fighting."
The old master listened quietly.
Finally, the young swordsman paused; thrusting his sword in his belt, bow his head and walked away. The students gathered around the old master. ' How can you let him offend you so much?  Why didn't you punish him? ' The old master waited for the group to calm down.

Then he said, "Someone comes to you and wants to give you a book, but you don't accept it. Who bears the burden of the book then? "

Peace work is anger work. Anger work is peace work.

We prepare the room at 19.15
Tea at 19.30, time to arrive and meet
At  20.00  meditation starts:  Guided meditation, walking meditation and silent meditation.
At 21.00 there is opportunity to share, Dharma Sharing
Around 21.30 closing, clean up, and tea.

 Warm regards

At Hemelrijken 77: Video van een Dharma talk door Thich Nhat Hanh: Embracing Strong Emotions with mindfulness

Dear Friends, Lieve vrienden,

We concentrated the past weeks on the sutra of the full awareness of breathing.
Each line of that sutra can be a study of a life time.

One line touches something that we encounter almost daily: Strong emotions.
How to take care for these emotions, not letting them take over and how to handle these situations. How to learn from your emotions and heal.

Monday evening we will come together and watch a video of a Dharma talk by Thich Nhat Hanh.
In this talk, Thich Nhat Hanh will extensively and step by step speak about strong emotions and how to handle the emotions. How the energy of mindfulness can be used to embrace an emotion, recognize it and understand it.
From the insight in your emotion, compassion and healing will grow.

The video is in English with Dutch (spoken) translation.
Doors will be open at 19h30 for tea and settling down.
Video will start at 20h00 followed by tea in silence.
At about 21h00 we can share our thoughts and experience in a Dharma sharing with the Sangha.

We wish you a nourishing weekend!!
Hans

Dear Friends, Beste Vrienden,

Hans

Dear Friends,
Before we know it we are distracted. Distracted from who we really are and who the other is.
Especially in situations that invoke strong emotions. If we are not trained to trust our stability, the emotions take control.
In our meditation this monday we wil use the Sutra on the full awareness of breathing to touch our own stability.

Doors open 19h15, tea at 19h30,  (Mimosaplein 2)
Meditation starts 20h

Have a wonderful weekend
Hans
PS soon there will be English video's of Cuong Lu as well.

Vertrouwen, Faith

Beste vrienden, Dear Friends,

Last week we looked at the whole Sutra on the full awareness of breathing.
As can be read in the book:
Adem is bewustzijn ISBN 90 5670 035 9 or in English:
Breathe! you are alive ISBN 9780712654272

This week we concentrate on a part of it: Having faith in the dharma, having faith in yourself. (Vertrouwen in de Dharma, vertrouwen in jezelf.)

The Buddha invites us in the Sutra to come home to our body in the present moment by conscious breathing.  And to take care of our body, our thoughts, our emotions and our mind. Firstly by having compassion, loving kindness and cultivating joy and happiness. And next by observing with open eyes, open ears and open heart; without judgement. In the last part of the Sutra we are invited to study the way we look at the world and see impermanence and Interbeing.

One of the difficult things about this invitation for me has allways been the moment that I encountered difficulties, like strong emotions. My first reaction was mostly: Stop don't go there, or just to quit and go away.
Clearly the strong emotion stayed and came back the next time.
The antidote I found is in two practices that Thich Nhat Hanh has thought us:
"The Island of Self" and "the 5 powers". (Faith, Dilligence, Mindfulness, Concentration, Insight) (Vertrouwen, Toewijding, Mindfulness, Concentratie, Inzicht)
Both practices come down to having faith in yourself and in the dharma.

When you encounter a strong emotion, have faith that the emotion is impermanent. Have faith that you are not your emotion, have faith that you have the wisdom to handle the situation, have faith that you are not alone.

Monday we will meditate on experiencing faith (het voelen van vertrouwen)

Doors will be open 19h15 to set up the room at Mimosaplein 2.
From 19h30 we have tea together.
Meditation starts at 20h (guided sitting, Silent walking & sitting)

Enjoy your weekend,
Hans

Hoe is het met 'mij', How is 'me' doing

Beste vrienden, Dear friends,

Hans

Dear friends,
You are invited to sit down and meet yourself. Have a loving friendly conversation like you have with an old friend. 'How is 'me' doing...
The Sutra on the Full awareness of breathing gives a beautiful suggestion for such a conversation.
Make contact with your body
Concentrate on your body and relax and care for your body.
Even so for your thoughts, emotions and mind.
Bring joy and happiness into your mind  and your thoughts.
Take care of yourself like you whistle while washing your car, just to enjoy and make it beautiful.
The Sutra ends with your relationship with the world, let go of boundaries and craving. Come home and enjoy the feeing of interbeing and impermanence.

We will meet at  Mimosaplein 2
Doors open at 19h15,
meditation starts at 20h.

Have a wondrous weekend and a enlightening meeting.
Hans
