March 25th : Strong emotions, coming home to yourself. Thuiskomen bij jezelf

Uitnodiging Sangha Avond 25 maart 2019
Handling strong emotions, coming home to yourself
Omgaan met sterke emoties, thuiskomen bij jezelf

Dear Sangha friends, beste Sangha vrienden (Dutch below)

Our day to day life confronts us with many challenges and with beauty.
Often we forget to see and experience the beauty because we are overwhelmed by strong emotions.
The past two weeks have been very challenging, with violence and strong controversy in our society.

How to deal with this and how to stay together as humans and share this earth in respect and peace.

Monday evening we will watch a short video of Thich Nhat Hanh speaking about handling strong emotions and taking care of the voice in us that needs attention.
If we do not take care of the suffering and and feelings of anxiety, grief and anger, these emotions will run our lives and our society.
With full awareness, understanding and compassion we calm the emotions and are able to come to the insight on what causes the emotions.
We can come home to ourselves and take care of ourselves and the world around us.

Monday march 25th we will have our evening of mindfulness in 'de schatkamer' Mimosaplein 2 Eindhoven.

With warm regards,
I wish you a beautiful weekend full of emptiness and silence; wonder and gratitude,
Hans

Beste Sangha vrienden,

Being free; Ideas, boundaries, plans, regrets and sorrow dissolve into freedom.

Uitnodiging Sangha Avond feb-4;'19
Being free; Ideas, boundaries, plans, regrets and sorrow dissolve into freedom.

Being in the world, being part of the world.
Being free in the world; Vrij zijn in de wereld

We investigated our relationship to the world in the past weeks. Now we look at our mind and how our mind constantly creates images and desires.
When we observe something, our mind immediately attaches a feeling of pleasant, unpleasant or neutral to the experience. If we do nothing and let our mind run free, these notions or these impressions are stored without a second look. And next time you will be primed with that feeling before you can look what is going on.
Sometimes our first shallow impression is wrong, and we need the energy of mindfulness to guide our mind and re-examen the situation.

The past weeks we investigated if borders are real and if things are permanent. Now we look if we can look without bias, if we can be open, if we can experience without expectation or desire.
The heart sutra invites us to see that the true nature of the world is of emptiness, empty of a separated self, empty of division, empty of permanence. The world is empty of all our notions and judgments, it is only our mind that creates notions and preferences.

If and when we can let go of these notions we will be free.
The Sanskrit word for that is Nirvana, the extinctions of notions

Our true nature is that we are free. We have the ability to see the things as they are and to act without the bias of desire or fear.

You open up, at peace with the reality of life. Being fully connected with life, based on the insight of interbeing, impermanence and emptiness, boundaries have no meaning.  Practicing to let your concepts, your mental formations go.

Monday feb-4th we will have our evening of mindfulness in 'de schatkamer' Mimosaplein 2 Eindhoven.

We received kind words from Job, Job sends his kind greetings to the Sangha and hopes to join again soon.

With warm regards,
I wish you a beautiful weekend full of emptiness and silence; wonder and gratitude,

Hans

Beste Sangha vrienden,

Echter, soms is onze snelle oppervlakkige indruk fout.

Warme groeten
Hans

The Buddhist 10-years challenge

Uitnodiging Sangha Avond 28-jan'19
The Buddhist 10 years challenge.
De boeddhistische 10-jaars uitdaging.

Being in the world, being part of the world.

How is your relationship with the world. How do you relate to the world.
This was the question posed to us last week during our meditation evening.

It touches the notion of interbeing. The notion of Interbeing is an attempt to describe the insight that boundaries are fictions and that our lives are, our being is intertwined.
In the sutras it is described as "this is because that is, this is not because that is not"
In simple terms: the one cannot exist without the other.

If we now look at our self image, (that is the way that we think of our selves), we often have the idea that we are a constant separated entity, traveling through space and time.
Thanks to social media, we have the gift of the 10-years challenge ;-)
Lets do this the Buddhist way:
Find a picture of you 10 years ago and a picture of you today. Have a close look. Is that the same person? or is that someone different?
The notion of impermanence and Interbeing tries to illustrate that we are in constant flux, in constant change. The I is not separated from the we, the day to day language puts us on the wrong foot.

The real 10-years challenge is if you can experience that the "I" is a temporary experience of a temporary collection. The "I" only exists in this form in this moment.
Our memory makes and keeps a constructed image of our selves and of our past. If you concentrate you can bring back memories of the emotions, the hopes and regrets of the person in that picture. These can be so strong that your view of the present is shaped by it.

The Buddhist teachings tell us "Each moment is new" "Each person can be free of the past, can be free of sorrow, regret, guilt and loss" "Each person can be free of the future as well"

You open up, at peace with the reality of life. Being fully connected with life, based on the insight of interbeing and impermanence, boundaries have no meaning.  Practicing to let your concepts, your mental formations go. And be free in every moment.

Monday Jan 28th we will have our evening of mindfulness in 'de schatkamer' Mimosaplein 2 Eindhoven.

With warm regards,
I wish you a beautiful weekend full of emptiness and silence; wonder and gratitude,

Hans

Beste Sangha vrienden,

Being in this world, being one with this world

Uitnodiging Sangha-avond 21-jan'19
Being in the world, being part of the world

Being in the world, being part of the world.

How is your relationship with the world. How do you relate to the world.
When you look closely, it is impossible to define a clear border between you and the world.
The tea that I am drinking, the apple that I eat will be me for a while and then will move on on its journey in this world. My body is constantly changing and renewing. cells are constantly dying and being born in my body.
The things I hear and see mold the things I think, say and do.
My presence in this world does not stop at my skin. I am present as a brother, father, friend, son, teacher, pupil and will be  present long after my body has disintegrated. Like the presence of our ancestors is still visible.
Our existence is beyond space and time. This world is one body.

In the morning chant of PlumVillage the first line always brings me directly into that experience:
"The dharma body is bringing morning light."

Over rijkdom: Let it rain.

Beste vrienden, dear friends (English below)

Dear Friends,

Some time ago I came across a man in the supermarket. He grabbed my shopping cart for support, with a painfull face. He told me that he has had an accident and his knee was seriously damaged. He was treated well, but the healing process would take a long time. And he could help by walking a considerable distance  at least once a day  and then sit down en let the knee recover. The practice he choose was to walk to the grocery store every day, about a kilometer. With groceries. He continued his practice and I went in for some shopping. On my way home I met him again. His walk looked difficult, but he was almost home. He waved and wished me a nice day.
I see him regularly. He recognizes me, greets me and wishes me a nice day, with a happy face. Slow progress in his walking. Four months, he had said.

The richness of this man is that he strengthens his healing by his inner faith that the knee will recover and that he can do something. That's his insight and his acting. Not only look at what is not going well but also to what is going well. That is how to make contact with your inner wealth.

Edel Maex calls this ‘looking in a different way’ the base of the meditation practice. A basic turnaround. Not just to the North, but also to the South.
Take a look at what you are good at besides your limitations. Look at the beautiful white lotus and realize that that lotus is beautiful because that lotus has processed the mud. That requires the willingness to look deeply.

In the Lotus Sutra, where I get my inspiration for this theme came from is another inspiring l metaphor. The image of the rain. All plants are in the same rain but every plant pulls out exactly what she needs to become this plant.
So sitting means sitting in the rain. . As Buddha is depicted in meditation posture, he often sits on a lotus flower. Under that Lotus the mud.
The wealth shows itself in what you encounter and what you do.
The looking practice for me was seeing this practice power in this man, who may never have heard of mindful practice.

I invite you on your pillow/chair/bench to sit down: your lotus and this way of looking. In the rain of the silence, in the rain of the practice.
Warm greetings,
Joost Vriens.

Beste vrienden, dear friends (English below)

There are thousands upon thousands of students
who have practised meditation and obtained its fruits.
Do not doubt its possibilities because of the simplicity of the method.
If you can not find the truth right where you are,
where else do you expect to find it?

(Dogen)

Hartegroet,
Joost Vriens.

Dear Friends,

During one of the first days of 2019 I opened the book of Cuong Lu ' This is happiness '  on the page titled: you are very rich. That gave me a smile.
It was a good change of perspective in the flow of advertising and sale that engulfs us these days: you come short, here's what you need. And if you don't need buy it anyway because it is 50% off!

In the subsequent days there grew a question in me: what is here meant by: wealth. Happy with the talents that you use, develop instead of the always present deficits? Satisfied with work, time allocation, food, living environment, relationship? Can you see more opportunities in situations than the difficulties? Cuong Lu is clear: it is time to shift the attention from the focus on suffering to focus on happiness.

He refers to the Lotus Sutra.
The message there is, in many different ways  that that wealth is that you have the ability, through practice, to catch a glimpse of the ultimate reality. Not the world of the habit, duality, the constraints of time and space, but freedom, emptiness. Very difficult to describe in words.

There are thousands upon thousands of students
who have practised meditation and obtained its fruits.
Do not doubt its possibilities because of the simplicity of the method.
If you can not find the truth right where you are,
where else do you expect to find it?
(Dogen)

Bernie Glassmann writes also about the Lotus Sutra. He says that enlightenment is the willingness to keep on learning, to stop and see over and over again.
One of his ways was organising retreats in Auschwitz and on the streets in New York, with the homeless persons.
I, you, we, are potential Buddhas. We are budding lotuses that feed from the muddy water. The practice to see a change in a setback . Practice, over and over again in order to contribute to a rich, liberated world.

I invite you to take part in the sangha meeting of Monday 7 January 2019 with subject: awareness of a rich life.

Kerstwens en liefdevol gedenken; Christmas wishes and loving remembrance; december 2018

Christmas wishes and loving remembrance december 2018

Dear Sangha friends, beste Sangha vrienden (Dutch below)

At the end of 2018 we stop in gratitude, for many the Christmas season is a time to come together and share and cherish the warmth and friendship. Christmas holds for me the symbolism of the birth (or awakening) of loving kindness and compassion; Of inclusiveness and solidarity.

At the same time we have a loving remembrance of everything we have received and the friends that have passed or are in difficulty.

Especially we bring in our attention
Brigitte Mulder,
recent member of our Sangha, who passed on last week, on december 8.
Next to her joyful loving and inspiring presence she has brought a beautiful book into this world:
"Yoga voor Kinderen" which will give joy and freedom to many.
www.yogaenmeditatie.com

and we bring in our attention
Anna Tulkens,
who passed on last year, on Christmas eve december 24th - 2017.
Anna was present at the founding of our Sangha more than 10 years ago and her sparkling creativity has infected the people around her. Her positive wisdom helped the Sangha to go on during a difficult start.
Anna told me once that the moment she heard that she was ill, there came an immediate calmness and clarity in her. She said: "This is what is given me and I will love and enjoy to make it beautiful"
With her friendly and persistent energy she took on her illness together with her partner Bram. Together they created the awarded web-service of www.HOESTIE.nl ; a platform for contact between a person that is critically ill and the community of family and friends.

With warm regards,
I wish you a wonderful day,
Hans

Beste Sangha vrienden,

www.yogaenmeditatie.com

en we gedenken
Anna-Eva Tulkens,

Anna-Eva
